My buddies and I usually don't run back country until bear season. The bigger bear seem to stay off the roads to avoid getting dogged. The easiest way is to find a long high ridge and just stay on top of it makes it a lot easier then climbing up and down the mountains. The Garmin helps a lot and saves a lot of miles on your legs.

Alot of times people in our group hike in a hiking trail all day with there dogs and come out at the ends , sometimes they pickup a track .

I always carry a 36 hour pack while hunting. I hunt lots of areas without roads. You just have to be smart like was previously mentioned and stay up high and cut cross country. Them dogs can cover more ground in a day than most of us can in 3

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

This is the reason why when the GPS first came out we were a little skeptical because of the short battery life. Up here in the Kootenays we have some nasty "NO MANS LAND" we call it where we would loose dogs for a week or more sometimes. Although this was very rare. Sometimes helicopters were used to find them and thank god the Wildlife Materials was still sending out a ping. GPS has almost eliminated this now with being able to stay somewhat in the race and at least have there tracks. Even better now with the new ALPHA with the rescue mode. As soon as I saw that I was sold. If your going to be hunting in "NO MANS LAND" I suggest to crank your update rate down so your battery will last much longer and ease your mind a bit.. Have Fun.
