Can you tell the differnce in male female bobbers in a tree

Post by kansas0311 »

This might be a stupid question but I am going to ask it anyways. I was wondering if there was a way to tell. The difference between a male and female bobber in a tree. I know there is a way to tell the difference in lions. If it is possible I would rather not kill a female and let them live. Thanks for your help again

There's no foolproof way that i know of but you can make an educated guess. If you hunt in the snow you can use the size of the track to make your guess.Smaller the track, probably a female Like i said not foolproof .You can use binoculars, like i do and look at the size of the head to make your determination.Hope this helps .

You know I would like to make a comment or suggestion if I may ! I would like to say that if you are going to take the cat and tan the hide and sell it or if you are going to eat the meat then by all means take the cat. But, If you are taking the cat just because you have treed it then may I suggest that you hook up the dogs and leave it in the tree. This will do a couple of things ! First the cat will be there to run the next time you go hunting. Second the cat learned something from the experience and the next time it will be a little harder for the dogs to tree. If you are into hunting for the sport and not just the hides then the race maybe a little better thus giving you a better experience the next time you run this particular cat.

Just a thought...

That's a good point, I don't want to take every cat that I put up in the tree. That is why I asked. Its just like deer hunting take the old mature ones so the little guys can live to be old and mature. Also leave the females so they can have more litters so we houndsmen have something to chase in the future. If you kill all the females then you kill the future of our sport.

You can tell if its male of female by looking for the twig and berries. Now cats are not well endowed but in males the spot is about 3-4 inches from the Vent and there are some small berries between the Vent and the spot. Females the Spot is right around an inch from the Vent.
You will need binoculars for taller trees and you may have to watch a while if its sitting with branches in the way.
