The catdogs my dad had when I was in high school were like dog 3 . My dad hunted like loyd basey. If the track was not hot enough to get lined out and going within 5 min. he would call the dogs and go to the next crossing until they hit one hot enough . There are very few people that hunt this way . If u know where the familys of cats live u can just go from family to family until u hit one that is runnable. Those dogs would take a cold track if u let them . they were silent until they reached the point of the race is on. I grew up with that style and im used to it. some times u would have to drive around and just find the dogs treed . I look at a race different than most of u guys I guess. I like the fact that the dog is sneaking up on the cat and the cat has no clue it is being pursued . Then u hear a sqawl and a sqeel and the race is on. might last 1 min or 2 hours depending on the cat and terrain.

JC I always hoped the dogs I owned would open, giving more mouth than necessary on an old track at times. However I did not always have every one in the pack that opened to suit me. At times I had a variety much like you stated you own now. I sold the pusher hound to Wendell because he was too conservative with his mouth on an older track. I recall hunting with hunters who felt he opened about perfect for them. Getting a hound that suits one is more difficult than seems it should be at times. I knew the type hound you like long ago, when you came to visit me about trying to reproduce hounds like Cindy, Kelly & Pusher. I had a few other people call looking for that blood & really that was just a one time cross that produced hounds that caught game & I was a little surprised to find that many who desired those traits. The old rowdy hound was much more open than most of the pups out of him, but he sure would tighten his mouth on a educated critter & run to catch. That/s why I try to remember to say hunt the type hound you enjoy, & as you say tight mouth hounds can make catching cats quicker at times, however in my experience on some cats it did not work. Good luck . Al

Jc,I think you just pointed out the secret to the type of hound different hunters like .It's that first really good hound you hunt with that catches game .For me it was a big long legged black and tan that my grandpa in Rattan,Oklahoma sent my dad here in Oregon .He had a medium to cold nose was blazing fast and a pressure tree dog.He was full open and didn't try to sneak up on a cat.He ran them down! He's been my role model and measuring stick ever since.

I vote 3 1/2 cause that it what I own and works for me. They don't bark out of place if they are opening they are moving forward. 99% of the time with cat & fox they will shut up when jumped.

I guess i just like hearing a good race. On a hard running cat i find myself rooting for the cat more as time goes by. A good running cat is harder to come by when ya sneak up on em and scare the bjesus out of em. I have a brother that is deaf and he liked hunting with me when we were younger but he didnt seem to enjoy it as much as i did. Maybe because he couldnt hear the dogs. Im with Blue on this one, if you're just wanting to kill cats get some traps, they're cheaper. Or if ya cant come up with a silent dog, just wear ear plugs.

I like a silent dog that only blows up when it jumps the cat. Makes for less wolf bait on the mountain as well. I do enjoy listening to the hound music. Every dog I have is different in the way they track. I like having diverse hounds.

Hey Mark, maybe some could make the cat wear ear plugs! Those new garmin collars, might be able to accomplish that, from all the things I read about them. See there is a sense of humor in me. Al

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!! Al has a sense of humor. I knew it was there somewhere. Maybe we could start running cats with Drones. Then we could see exactly what is going on in a race, always be at the front end and never get beat! Drones are probably cheaper than dogs too ( if we were honest to ourselves about the cost of hunting with dogs) anyways keep the humor coming Al. Sorry for trashn your thread JC i will buy ya a saspirilla next time i see ya.

Mark,

Don't give this current administration any ideas, with The Drone Man as President anything is possible. He will be having USDA bombing nuisance wildlife with drones before long, if it will keep us out of the woods and take away more of our liberties!

Just look what they are doing to the rodeo clowns. Wow how time has changed our nation.

Sorry JC, I guess I owe you a sarsaparilla also! :beer
