Just a FYI....snow is different in different parts of the country, moisture content, wind blown or not, ect. What works in one area may not work in another. Just something to think about....

Very true ! I run with a few guys with tracked quads they go good. However they use twice the fuel too ! Cant pull a sled with dogs very well either. In regards to the price my old Indy 500's you can buy two of them for the price of one track for a quad...
Re: what snow machine you use?
I have a 2002 Polaris 550 fan cooled sled that has been the most reliable one I have ever owned. 600 trail rmk has been pretty good also.

Re: what snow machine you use?
fejr, a trapper here bought the tracks. We watched him try to go through 4 foot of snow. As soon as he left the trail he sunk, just Couldn't do it. It would be great to see a couple of pictures of these tracked machines in action!!! I could see them working in less than 3 feet of snow. Anyone have pictures to show!!!
Re: what snow machine you use?
if the snow ain't set up many utility type sleds won't go either..you just swim.

Pulls a sleds with ease. I have used that Grizzly to pull out that 3/4 ton Dodge deisel 4x4 that is in the picture. We got the that truck buried pulling a 4 place atv trailer 2 Christmases ago while cat hunting, we unloaded the 4 wheeler and drug the truck (with someone driving the truck) and the trailer over 10 miles through fresh snow, breaking the trail as we went, so yeah a sled with hounds isnt a problem, you dont even know they are back there. Yeah it isnt as fast with the tracks as with the wheels but when hunting I am not blazing through the woods anyway. My 4 wheeler does about 65mph without the tracks and about 40+mph with the tracks, plenty of speed for hunting. I wasnt aware that you needed to do 80-100mph while hunting.

I know a guy that just sold his act with tracks and bought a sled because he couldn't go were we were with our sleds.

Re: what snow machine you use?
My atv's are for work, not play. You would never see me going over 40mph. My snowmachines are a different story. I will go fast on them when I can. It's just not fun otherwise!! My snowmachines are what we use during our winter wolf hunt or ice fishing excursions.

What kind of 4 wheeler did he have? If the tracks are not for that machiene and set up right it makes all diffference in the world. Did he have a four wheeler with a front locker? Actually I can go most places with this Grizzly without even using 4 wheel drive with the tracks, if it gets really deep just shift in and lock the front end locker and it will go anywhere. You can change the cogs, the wheel part of the track, it changes the gearing just like swapping a ring and pinion in a rear end. If you have the wrong gearing and a ATV with not enough azz to turn them properly your ATV will suck with tracks. This is pretty common when someone goes the cheap route and buys a used set of tracks that doesnt match there ATV's performance. Also the brand of tracks makes a difference, if you check out youtube you will see alot of people have problems with the Matttracks, they dont hold up as well or go as good as the Camoplast Tatou 4's. I did a lot of research on reviews and actual owner testomony before buying.
Here is a good video compareing the two.

Like I said Tatou 4's are the way to go, my money says the guys you know with tracks that arnt going places are using Mattracks.
Here is another good video, showing stuck snowmobiles getting pulled out by a tracked ATV, the tracked AtV does get stuck eventually, shows that it doesnt matter what you have they both can get stuck. Personally I have never had mine stuck or even been close to being stuck.

Re: what snow machine you use?
Here is WI we cannot use ATV's for the most part. Esepcially on the snowmobile trails in the winter. I dont even own one because I cannot use one. Unless on a marked trail, frozen lake, or private property.
So it's all sleds. I have been using any cheap junk I could afford. Been around a lot of others as well. The mountain cat is a great sled that can go most places with ease here. Wider ski's are a huge advantage. I picked up a 97 panther. They are close to the same as the MC's but have the nice things on them stock. Like electric start, and reverse. A bit heavier being a touring sled vs mountain. But still go real well in deep snow.
The big thing is a long track! You will see a huge difference going from the standard 121's to a 136. Even more as you go up. Friend had a 144 until wrecked it. Then got a replacement of same year etc but 136. A very noticeable difference there as well.
I can go just about anywhere with my panther as he can with his MC. My lighter/smaller motor helps a lot when you do stick it. 440 vs 570. The 440 has all the power and speed I need.

Re: what snow machine you use?
Here as long as the atv has tracks, it is concidered a snow mobile so we can go on any designated snowmobile trail.

You must turn around or leave it on the trailer when the hills get steep and the powder gets deep.
