Did the authors of United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination take it upon themselves to change the intent of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?
Young America’s Foundation thinks so. The high school textbook, which is used at Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, among other schools, contains a summary of each Constitutional Amendment, several of which seem to alter the initial intent in which the respective Amendment was written.
The textbook summarizes the Second Amendment as:
“The people have a right to keep and bear arms in a state militia.”
The actual Second Amendment reads:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Notice the subtle differences. While the actual language of the Amendment emphasizes the right ofthe people to bear arms, the edited version shifts that right exclusively to a state militia.
So, is this much ado about nothing, or was there really an intent to alter the meaning of the Second Amendment? I might tend to side with those who believe Young America’s Foundation is being a bit picky here – were it not, again, for this simple fact:
The edited version in the text book makes the same argument – intentionally or otherwise – thatgun grabbers make: The Second Amendment speaks to a militia’s right to bear arms; not to the rights of individuals to bear arms.
Coincidence and honest mistake – or yet another example of the attempt by “progressives” to rewrite history, restrict the gun rights of law-abiding Americans and indoctrinate America’s school kids?
