Helping to teach your hound to hunt

Post by PaulJames1 »

Is there any way to help teach your hound to hunt on a coon track? Thanks.

I think you might want to get yourself one of the 2 books by John Wick.. "A walk With Wick-- the tree dog encyclopedia"
there are 2 books you can get them from NiteLite Co- -www.huntsmart.com
you will learn a lot by reading those books.

FIRST THING__ FIND OUT IF IT IS LEGAL TO SET UP A FEEDER!!!

I will post a picture of what I use after I hook up with Photobucket and explain some

Image
this is a LT 245r-16 tire I put about a gallon of shelled corn in it,
leave about an inch below the bottom lip of the bead for space for the corn to swell--- pour a package of grape Kool aid in and fill it the rest of the way with water. it will draw coon.
after a few short days the corn most likely be gone.. it will get them to using the site.
I set a trail cam there to check when the coon are hitting it then you will know the time to take the pup

But again first, get at least one of those 2 books and read it several times.
I am 67 years old and I find there is a lot in them that I did not think about when I got them.. I have only been hunting with hounds 53 years. ,

2nd, MAKE SURE it is legal to place feeders and that you have permission on the land you wish to use..

Alright I'll check if its legal. I actually do got the first book of Walk with Wick, but not the 2nd. And I do got a trail cam, so once I find a place to hunt I'll start setting it up. Oh okay that makes a lot of sense. So once I figure out what time the coons are coming to my feeder, than I release him on the track around the same time. I've been dying to go, but don't know any areas to hunt on.

I use a five gallon bucket(paint or spackle) Cut out a hole on the side at the botton just big enough to glue and screw in a1 1/2" plastic male adapter. Attach a block of wood 180 degrees from the hole. Screw the block of wood with the bucket on it to the tree about 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Fill with cheap dog food. give it a week for the coons to find it. I paint the buckets flat black and green
