Training in Heat

Post by createdagain »

Can i continue training my 5mo blue tick/walker while she is in "heat"? She will complete her 1st cycle right when the bear season ends. I would love to get her on a bear soon.

thanks

Your only option would be to hunt her with other females until she's out of heat.

Thanks. Right now she is my only dog. So she should fine? Should I be concerned about other predators trailing her

No,at various times in my hunting career i've had all females and when they came in heat i just kept on hunting. No problems unless you run into someone hunting a male.

Awesome thanks 1bludawg. I was getting bummed out I wouldn't be able to get her on a bear this year.

Createdagain,in my humble opinion she's way to young to put on bear.Wait till next season and she'll be just right to start on them .

I'll take that into consideration.

In Dale Lee's cd, he said a hound shouldn't be started on bear until it was at least a year old & sometimes that was too soon.

She is already wanting to go. It will be hard to keep her from trailing bears. We've had several bears in our neighborhood this summer and she gets right on thier scent. When we go for a walk she is trailing like crazy for whatever it might be (cats, dogs, fox, bear, etc..) I am reducing the walks right now since she is in heat because i don't want just any dog to breed with her. I plan on running her for lion also. what are you thoughts on that?

At 5 mos. old she's not physically or mentally mature enough to run on big game .Any traumatic event could possibly/probably ruin her .Personally i don't start my pups until they're 7 mos. old.You could work with her on small game but even then you have to be careful at her young age.Don't let her get chewed up by anything.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think physically she is developing great. When i "walk" her we usually put in a few miles at a time. I've taken her on several hikes for about 12-15 miles and she does great. I will be cautious of course.
