I hear your pain. from oct 10 to nov 8 is torture here. as soon as the pilgrims go home we can too.
caught a coon a few days ago so the new pound hound has been getting some exposure, made a drag in the dark (so as not to disturb the deer hunters) through the neighbor's swamp. turns out the little dog is scared of the dark and afraid of the water, guess we got a few things to work on.
went back the next day( no deer hunters today) with my buddies pack of old dogs, I thought maybe they could show mine a thing or two, did they ever. One came right out of the box and t-boned a camel hump flipped upside down and went to squalling, we got her pride fixed up and then it was on the next obstacle, Mud puddles. same dog went splashing in to one that had no bottom, she just disappeared for a second, turns out she can swim  .I guess mountain dogs need time in the swamp to. they had a slow start but still managed to pick up a loop in the track for my pups. Had good time playing with the dogs, hope this helps with the deer season blues.

I never understand why those rules are in place. Here in Canada there are no such rules, however where I am, a dog caught chasing deer is supposed to be shot (written in the wildlife act)... so I certainly wouldn't want to send a non-broke dog out into the bush.

I did some research into it and found a study that was funded by ducks unlimited. It was looking at the effect of coon hunting on whitetail deer movement. They went out and caught a bunch of deer and put radio-collars on them and released them back into the bush. Two months later, they started to track their movement, and they found that there were no differences in deer movement before the bush was hunted (coon hunted with dogs) or the following day after a coon hunt. The researchers also noted that many coon hunters saw deer that were bedded down however the dogs had no effect on the deer activity.

To me it seems as though laws are never made off of evidence. I am sure a dog once barked and some politician didn't get to shoot his buch because of it and now there are laws as such.

I always liked it when a pack of hounds came through or some grouse or duck hunters started shootin while I was sitting for deer. Gets the bucks out of their beds and makes them think, hell, as long as I'm up, I might as well go for a little walkabout...
