Big day with the dogs

Post by chilcotin hillbilly »

Got out for the first real hunting day of the season, I had all day to find some work for the dogs.
We started slow but ended with a bang. One lynx and two lions.

Nice day! I am still trying to catch my first cat with my noobies........a noob houndsman with 2 noob hounds. On a side note, walking out a lynx track is tricky! Time to go find a fresh lion track.......
Your dogs are looking great.

Not to single a dog out of the pack but I have an infatuation with half catahoulas and that one on the left caught my eye. whats he run like, anything special. If he's good where did he come from. Congrats on the kitties.

That one is a pure bred leopard cur. He came from Nick Riley who is also on this site. I never thought he would make a lynx dog but learning with the pack he runs with I think he is proving me wrong.

Looks like a really good day. Seen your other post about the wolf hunts, how do you minimize interaction with wolves while running your dogs up there in BC?

I have my dogs so I can call them off a track with the tone on their E collar.
There is not much you can do, I run more dogs then used to. I am not sure if it makes a difference, only time will tell.

Out of the pack of dogs shown is there one you just can't leave home? And if you have a favorite which one is it just wondering.

sdred, The light brown one and the walker in the front right are top flight dogs, they don't get any better.
If I am to leave any at home it is those two. Any dog will catch a lion so if I am lion hunting you don't need to take them, lynx on the other hand pose little threat to the dogs and require top dogs to catch.
The three males in the picture are really becoming world beaters. It really pays to have two top notch dogs for them to learn from.
It seems to make a big difference.

Thanks for the reply an never would have thought of that but it makes sense. Are lynx tougher to catch than bobs? or about the same. I have a female that has trained a few good bobcat dogs an that is what I had to do is leave her home so they could make that finale step an become start to finish on their own. Lynx is on my list to tree with my hounds someday. Cool pack of hounds by the way.

Im have little experiance with bobbers but I have yet to see bobcat dogs that can come here and catch lynx right out of the box unless it is a really hot track. There is a lot of different aspects to lynx hunting that you won't typically get with bobcats. I think most dry ground bobcat dogs could do alright with a bit of practise.
