UTV Tracks

Post by icehole »

Wondering how many have experience with tracks on a utv. I have a prowler I am thinking about tracking up. Do these things go in the snow good enough to justify 5 grand in tracks? Sure looks like a better way to go than replacing a snowmachine. I am concerned a Utv might be to heavy for tracks in anything more than a foot or two of snow.

I had a set of mattracks on JD gator last winter, 52 hp 825i, used them in co and az worked fine. They are now on can-am commander, 85 hp will be heading west soon to see how they do on this machine. You need lots of power also power steering and carry some extra gas, I have dog box on back can haul four hounds and full cab with heat. Never been stuck so far or needed the winch. The can-am does a little over 20 mpg on wheels, has 10 gal tank so should have near 100 mile range with tracks but Ill still carry some extra gas.

My first rig with Tracks was a prowler. I had a lot of trouble with breaking tie rods and other parts because of the tracks. If you do end up putting the tracks on the prowler, buy an extra tie rod and be familiar with how to replace it. My prowler was a 700. It had plenty of power and i had it in a couple feet of new snow plenty of times. you just cant go up too steep of a slope. But if you can pick your way up the mountains you will be fine.
I have now moved on to Polaris Rangers with Tracks. They are far superior to the Prowler. I have had zero problems in 2 years with the Ranger. (knock on wood)

My prowler is a 2012 700 hdx. Would it have the same issues as a earlier model? I am not getting a good feeling about tracking it with what I am reading. Anyone have a newer prowler with tracks?

I bet those guys with the running dog crosses could even keep up with their dogs on one of those.

Dee,

It was not the tracks that were the problem. I took those same tracks and put them on a Polaris Ranger and had no more problems.
I really liked the prowler when running tires, but as soon as the tracks went on the problems came. I hate to talk poorly about the prowlers, but this was my experience. My machines were 2007 & 2008 machines, do i dont know if the newer machines have been corrected to combat the weak parts in the front end.

What brand of tracks were you running? Wonder if there could be a difference in the type of track as to how the machine works
