New to coon hunting

Postby Wildcat3 » Thu Dec 19, 2013 6:32 pm

Been kicking around the idea of getting a coon dog since I'm out of the deer dog business. Both clubs I was in are still hunting only now. I've been with some guys coon hunting a handful of times but wanted to ask a couple of questions. How far will a coon typically carry a dog before it trees? I know it isn't a set in stone thing but surely they don't blow out of the country like a deer does. Next, I'm considering getting a plot dog to coon hunt with. Anyone have any experience hunting plots ? Thanks for the help.

You're right. There is no set in stone rule. My experience in southern Ontario is that most coons will tree within a 20 acre piece. However, there are coons (particularly boar coons) that will take the dogs on a heck of a run. Especially in areas where you hunt often without harvesting them. If an old boar has been treed a time or two it seems they don't want to let it happen again. Those are chases you remember and will fool you into thinking your hound is running off game until you know your dog and can tell the difference by the sound of the race. I hunt plotts. My experience with them is great. They're known to be not as hard treeing dogs as the other breeds which is somewhat true to my experience but they can make you one heck of a hide dog but are often (apparently) beat out at the tree in competition. Just my experience.

I've been hunting my whole life and the only thing we ever had was plotts and walkers. Had great experience with them. Run em on coon and bear and, even though I prefer the walkers better, the plotts are just as good
If they don't bay, they don't stay

Catch em and stretch em, tree em and free em
