Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
Who uses dogs to decoy coyotes? At one point I was going to include running coyotes with the same dogs I use on bobcats, bear, coon, lion, Gray fox, lynx but the dogs rejected this notion....On a recent road trip bobcat hunting that goes on for days, I end up sleeping in my truck when I get tired, I shut down until the next day. The other night, I woke to coyotes swarming my truck barking at my dogs in the box and one of my young dogs barking back that only seemed to alienate the coyotes and keep them wanting the dogs and tossing caution to the wind....Got me thinking about decoying coyotes all the more? Hunt for a day only to end up grubbing a bobcat or two catching one here and on there or hunting for fifteen minutes on any road and able to smoke a coyote? Thought it would make sense to haul a good decoy dog along to break up the down time between races....I push the bar with dogs and if I lived in Wisconsin, I would be all over using hounds on wolves...
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
Just as it implies...A dog used along with predator calling/ howling to lure a coyote in to shooting range. The dog spots and chases the coyote causing a reaction in the coyote to trigger.... in turn the coyote chases the dog back to close shooting range.....Black Mouth Curs are widely used as a favorite by many in this practice. I'm wanting some information and will look at the coyote running dog forums.

I got ya. I was just wondering. I'm a coyote runner not a killer. Was just wondering never heard of that before. The black mouths would probably work for that. I have a pair as yard dogs and varmint dogs.

Mike, you must hunt the same bobcat population area I do. If a guy only had an area with access roads that allowed old farts to enjoy running coyote, how great it would be. Yotes make for a very action packed race, only thing that compares to it is a bear race. Trouble here yotes to often leave the road system. I never knew what the true meaning of a decoy dog was. David one thing I forgot to tell you is how true your statement was, when you said in( Oregon many times one drives a hundred miles to find a bobcot track the dogs can/t run.) There are sure days that happens to the best hunters I have known in this area. While I had never met or knew anything about you, that statement make me realize you had hunted in this area. Say again enjoyed reading your book. Al

Al
I hunt in Central Oregon not because I need snow but because my left leg is almost useless after two spinal operations that took out 90% of my leg use.... I find I can walk into all the cat trees over East. Last year, I had one cat tree on the West side I couldn't make and give up on the coast brush....I have access to all tree game and only a few years left to hunt and going to make the best of every second....I was amazed to find how the coyotes invaded my pickup and went after my dogs in the box so aggressively...Now I got the bug to kill coyotes. I guess I'm addicted to all trash game.....I think a guy could do this long after giving up the tree dogs out in the desert?
Merry Christmas Al to you and your family!

My curs run bobcat and decoy yotes .It is a blast as yotes will all fired up on the dogs and if you can cripple the first you can get a few more in one spot.I run mnt curs. And have done it all over the west and have never seen a bmc decoy dog?I have hog hunted a lot in Tex.Ok,and N.Mex with BMc's.and Cats.It will get addictive decoing yotes just like running them with wolf dogs, its just to much fun and you are more envolved with the dogs.

Re: Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
I have a very good BMC female that trails/trees lion, coon, has caught 2 bobcat and is as good a decoy dog anywhere. Works in pair with a fast Catahoula cross. She is 2.5 yrs old. Have good video of her at work. As I have 5 dogs and no two the same breed (BMC, Catahoula x, bluetick, black/tan, plott) I don't get hung up on breed. Just brains and heart. I am pretty sure I could take a standard poodle and turn him into a gritty, coyote decoy dog if he has the heart and brains. Takes lots of time and exposure.

Re: Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
I never pursue coyotes with the hounds present. To nose centric and every lion/bobcat/coon hunt would turn into a coyote race for sure if I were to let them run coyotes. The curs on the other hand will ignore a hot coyote that comes into a coon race unless I give them the green light. The size of the "decoy" dog has little to do with whether a coyote will pursue them or not......has to do with their brains and ability to feign weakness to lure the coyote.....they know what the end result will be.....dead coyote. Belle is actually grinning in the video and picture when the coyote is getting into range. Good times!

Re: Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
Sorry guys, I got side tracked helping my son in-law and Granddaughter skin an elk tonight...
Idcurs....
I'm liking the idea of using the same dog on bobcats....I have a profound belief a dog can do anything you ask them to do. I'm just not sure a hound would work as well as a cur dog....Just my thoughts, but I'm not able to say for sure. Just think a hound would run a coyote out of the country.
Gear up with this style dog and when the wolf arrives a guy will have learned from the pioneers in Wisconsin and go ahead on it right here in the West....
Jeff
That sounds good. I would appreciate the information in a PM....Hope all is going good in California for you!

Re: Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
mike look in workingdogsworldwide.com you will get a lot of decoy info there. a decoy dog does trail but don't run them out of the country. it took me a long time to understand how a dog could tree a cat one day and mess with a yotie the next without trashing on them the next day. brains go along way in a good hunting dog in my opinion. a hound usualy hunts for its self, you are just his ride to the woods. a mtn cur hunts for you. I use kemmers but you will find that the decoy dogs aren't breed specific. jmo anyway, you will enjoy the videos on the site good luck
no mater if you think you can or you think you cant,, you are probably rite.
Re: Who Uses Decoy Dogs?
Good luck Mike. I got two young dogs from Packojack, sent them to a guy over here in Lovington, NM to get trained on. I paid for training, and he raised a litter of pups out of one of my females. That wasn't part of the plan!!! Both of my dogs disappeared. I have info that he sold them. I looked all over trying to buy a trained dog, to no avail. The Frys no longer have coyote dogs either.
