i haven't personally put any dogs on a wolf but in talking with some buddies they said with this deep snow they have been running a big circle and trying to come back to their trench. usually stay just ahead of the dogs but some will catch. running somewhat like a coyote but for whatever reason they don't come out to a road and run down it or head for a trail and run down it. coyotes will find any snowmobile trail in the county and run down it.

I got out last sunday and tried it for the first time. Threw four hounds on a track in a big piece 4 by 5 miles in knee deep snow which was the only downfall. Dogs caught him in a half hour from the sounds of the barking but no one could get close. Dogs were caught and baying for probably 3 and half hours then it got dark. Not one scratch on any dog. Wish we had more time to try it again this weekend. Hounds are out of shape and for the first time of them running a wolf on purpose i think they did pretty good. It can be done and has been but i think everyone still has a lot to learn and to be cautious. Ive seen first hand a few times what they will do to a hound but if people are smart and throw hounds on a single or pair there wont be a problem. Congrats to the guys that got one.

Good question Budd...

I sure wouldn't think so...It would be to handy to want to slip them a lead sleeping pill!

I would never educate one beyond running a wolf for the first time and then killing them all!

Congratulations to all you guys who have pioneered this practice to a highest degree!

Agreed!!! Wolves are killing packs of hounds over here in this country just for fun. I cherish hound hunting to much to let my dogs chase wolves. Besides its not legal anyway here either. But running wolves with dogs I would want the biggest largest pack of mean bear dogs to turn loose.

The group i bear hunt with teamed up with a few other groups and we were able to take 6 wolves. I was with on two of the kills, which we got them both the same day. We had one track we threw on with two dogs. It seemed like moments after we put the dogs down, one went north and one went south and we had two wolves jumped. They both pretty much stayed in the same piece doing big circles. We were able to get shooters on the trench of one and ended up killing it. Pretty much one dog ran that one for about 2-3 hours by itself untill we were able to get 2 more dogs on it. The other one crossed one road into another piece and we ended up getting a couple more dogs on that one and got that also. It was awesome to be part of. They pretty much ran just like coyotes just much bigger animals and more rewarding. :)

No sir. In the original bill/proposal they tried to get a training type season, but that part of the bill was shot down.

Guess we'll have to live with what we got.. :)

I had no hope for this hunt from the beginning as the rules didn't seem feasible. And what dogs were people going to use!?! What breed more directly?? Nice to see proven wrong. The dogs didn't get shredded and the wolves didn't get ripped apart like the antis were crying about. How, I have no idea. But from the pics shown here, there doesn't seem to be any blood except from bullet wounds. I would have guessed hunters would have used different breeds, not the same ones the wolves were killing. But seeing that there isn't to be actual contact between the hounds and wolves I dont think dogs like kangal, CO, dogo, etc would have worked legally. I am so glad that the hound season went smoothly, hopefully it will be around for the future for use as a management tool. So hard to manage wolves, good to see hounding is feasible.
