I hope a few of you caught the recent episode of Meateater on the Sportsman's chanel. Steven Rinella went on two seperate hunts with several very good Arizona lion hunters one in the Guilaros and another up near the Blue. It showed a lot of cold trailing and track lore as well as just how challenging bare ground hunting can be. Rinella said this proved to him the huge challenge that bare ground lion hunting could be and truely dispells the theory many people have about how easy getting a lion can be with dogs. The fact of the matter at the end of this show no lions were caught but he truely had learned what a passion and effort it is to hunt the big cats one on one.
I thought it was very well done and certainly showed a side of lion hunting that is seldom seen or appreciated in general sportsman's circles.

Mike,
The two houndsman in the video are guys I know well. Joe Mitchell is one of them and a heck of a lion hunter. We started out together over 30 - years ago. And his partner on the show Floyd Green is also a very good lion hunter.

Right on Chris! These guys were hunting hard and finding sign and trailing but as you well know just cuz you trail a lion doesn't mean you are going to see him. On the bare ground there are so many variables. Like up on the top they had to deal with the ashes of the Wallow Fire and we all know what ashes and charcoal do to scent.

One of my favorite episodes. I think meateater is the best hunting show out. The narration and introspective way he does the show is awesome.

Rough country in the Galiuro mtns, if I'm not mistaken there hunting Camp Stool a ranch not many people hunt due to the fact the rancher keeps the gates locked and is not the friendliest person in town. That unit is open to hunt at night usually when I go out there is at night makes it easy to run them in the summer by the creeks up there. Gods country.
