Hello Everyone

Postby sheephunter » Tue Dec 31, 2013 6:15 pm

Hello Everyone!
I hope everyone had a Great Christmas gift of being on a good pursuit. And I wish you all the best for 2014!

One of my best friends, Gavin Whitrock, passed away about a month ago. He was a houndsman that I thoroughly enjoyed hunting lion with. A great man, a great friend, and someone I could enjoy the passion of the pursuit with. He leaves us with his hounds.

He acquired a Smokey River group, blue tic hound from Eric Richardson, eastern Utah, back in April. We were really hoping to see how this finished hound would perform. Of course, we have not seen much, as no one has taken Blue out on the hunt. I finally got him out on a "fresh" lion kill on Christmas eve. A rancher called me that morning, and we were off. It turned out that that this kill did not look like a lion kill at all to me. Plus, the DOW came out and could not confirm it was. The dogs did not respond around the kill either, plus a snow flurry passing through and dropped about an inch of cover over everything, so we could not see the morning's tracks. But, they did light out on something about a quarter mile away. Turns out, we chased either a small lion or a big bobcat that took something "to go" from the kill and were feeding on it on a ledge, as there was blood sign below the junipers at this scenic overlook location. Still kinda puzzled about how the yearling steer died. Anyway, my question to you all, has anyone bought anything from Eric Richardson? And how was the product?

Thank you for responding and glad to have finally registered. Have a great holiday and hope your football teams fair well. Go Broncos!

I also wanted to say that I enjoy Bighorn Sheephunting, as that is why I registered as such. I drew for Mountain Goat this past fall, and harvested a nice billy in the late hunt. Late season goat hunting can be Extreme, as it was for me. The hunt had everything in it. I encourage you all to give it a go!

I would like to find out my friends' user name, so I can look up his discussions on this forum. How do I go about contacting the administrator to find his username? Thanks

I'll get a pic posted...i may post the story of the day's hunt too. You might like it. I haven't drawn for ram in 11 years. I used to hunt ewe before that. It's an easy tag to draw, as nobody wants to hunt ewe. It can be a tougher hunt. More eyes to deal with. I did send Buddy a note with my friends email several weeks ago, but haven't heard back.

As for my hunting with Gavin's dogs, I've been covering miles and miles, but it's just not working out. I did let the dogs loose on a couple occasions, just to see what they would do. They backtracked a lion to a deer kill, and came up on an elk kill on another outing. They got quiet on the elk kill. Found them eating on it when I got there. Little disappointed they didn't stay on the chase, especially the finished blue tick. We were trying to get him to lose some weight by reducing his food, and giving him good exercise...backfired that day. Otherwise, I'm still trying to get on a chase for lion to get the walker pup a good look. Wish me luck!
