Multiple species hound

My name is Allen from Sauk Rapids mn. So I really wanted to run bobcats with my coon hounds now that moved from western wi. I know plenty of guys that run coon and cats. That was my intention but I have to travel to far to find cats here to make hunting them work for me. Does anyone else out there run the same dogs on coon coyotes and bear? My thought is my dogs will run what ever I put them on during the day and at night when I cast them they will run coon. The seasons don't overlap. I run coon spring fall and summer. Coyotes in the snow. And bear in July in wi. Am I nuts. I think the thing I will be struggling with is coon hunting. Any thoughts would be apreciated.

I would say there's plenty dogs that would eagerly run all the above game and more. I just wouldn't get upset when I went for bear and ended up running coyote lol

I will just be more tolerant with running the wrong game. I just want to keep them going.

Go for it, if the dog has some smarts you will have a good time. I have used the same hounds on different game and done well, usually in the snow you will find the track that you put them on and things work out well, when you free cast them you never know what they might run, one thing is that your hound will be getting hunted and handled and just might make one hell of a good hound.

That sounds great if I can find a track to run in the morning. We will try for a coyote again. The one I am most concerned with is coon hunting. Do you think I could discourage coyote at night or on dry ground for bear and coon.

I dont no sqaght about coyote n bear--- BUT I DO KNOW IF YOU are going to RUN YOUR FINE HOUNDS on maltie critters -I would'nt try to discourage my COON DOG ! Unless they're not fineshed.A fineshed out COON DOG Has allready Had A LOT of DISCOURAGEMENT---I Would think!!!?YET--------GO FOR IT N Have A Blast !the sound of HOUNDS are AWESOME no matter what there Runnin' !

I have done this a lot over the years. I haven't even had that much trouble with dogs trashing out on coyotes when coon hunting. I have no idea why either but I just haven't had the problem one would think. In all honesty and all bullshit aside I have caught more daytime coons when running coyotes then I have running coyotes at night while coon hunting. Plus one dog at night on a coyote hahaha trust me the coyotes will do enough discouraging on their own. Most and I do mean most night time coyote races with one coon dog are the owner not wanting to face facts that his dog is running deer. Trust me!

I'm not saying that at all but I have run enough coyotes with hounds to tell you that some coyotes just aint gonna run from several hounds "at night" let alone one hound. I've seen what them snipey sumbitches will do to a dog at night. They are a totally different creature at night than they are during the day. You will see a few coyotes stand up several rough hounds at night that in general catch and kill most the coyotes they run.

Must be different coyotes there than we have. Our big coyote is 35 lbs and when he stops he's dead within a minute. If a coyote stops here its not to fight its because he's tired of running and he then dies

Edit to say: Seriously are you tellin me that you have never seen a couple coyote stand up 3 or 4 hounds at night?

That's odd. I've seen it quite a bit and our big coyotes are also only 35 pounds. I've seen dogs that are coyote killers get stood up at night. I don't even think the coyote is necessarily being that rough but more like a lil snipey bastard that's in and out and just being a pain in the ass almost kindly like when a bulldog gets frustrated I guess sorta.

I'm not saying that the dogs here are killing machines I'm saying there is nothing to our coyotes. When they stop its cause there tired. One dog knocks him down and then it's over.

Most of our coyotes are pretty much like that too but some of them at night here just wont run. I definitely don't have killin machines either. I've had an extremely hard time trying to find them kinda dogs in the running dogs. I've seen and had some that are pretty good but nothing bone crushing rough. Oh well, catching em is the hard part most the time anyhow so if a dog can do that I like em well enough.
