cherry eye

Post by jkfamily »

I have a 5 month old pup that has developed Cherry Eye. Can anyone tell me if this is a common problem in hounds, and will it affect her for the rest of her life? I have an appointment at the vet, after surgery is it likely to happen again?

Thank you for any info!

true cherry eye is most common in breeds with bulging eyes . like pugs ,pekes etc. hounds are very healthy in most cases some exceptions occur like designer bloodhounds or basset types. anything the show dog breeders have degraded with poor breeding practices. but typically your standard American hunting hounds are a working breed and bred to be free of defects and don't have protruding eyes or other weaknesses. the breed and strain of your hound would help get more specific info. or even a photo if you don't know. foreign objects can cause inflammation so check your dog thoroughly every day and most problems will not develop. one thing to watch for in hounds is that you clean their ears regularly to prevent dirt and moisture from causing irritations . good luck at the vets.

Took the pup to the vet today and it was cherry eye. I'm going to have them cut it out. She is a 100% Cameron bluetick would that close of breeding caused it?

It is very common in Blueticks in general. That houndy droopy eye look as a lot to do with it. And yes is is a very genetic defect.

She should not cut it out as that is a gland that produces a portion of the tear film over the eye. She should perform a procedure to tuck it back in place and tack it down. If you cut it out your dog will have an increased chance of developing Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS) or extreme dry eye. This would be a worse outcome than dealing with the cherry eye. Ask her to perform the pocketing procedure or find vet that will.

Cherry eye is not uncommon in all the hound breeds. In most cases, it is purely a cosmetic problem and does not cause serious health issues. Most owners have it surgically corrected--the procedure is simple and should be inexpensive. It is genetic, and I would think twice before breeding her, but you should do that anyway. I know of hounds with cherry eye that have won bench shows, so it isn't even considered a serious fault in conformation. It is ugly to look at. Once the surgery is done, it will not reoccur.

Take the dog to the vet and let them fix her eye. I had a beagle that got it when she was 10 months old. The vet fixed it and now she is 8 years old and never had a problem. She is a lot closer to the ground and runs through sticker bushes all the time. I have been told it is genetics but I know the guy that bred her and he own everything behind her for like 3 generations and had never had the problem. She did accidentally get bred, her pups would be about 5 now and I sold them with the guarantee I would pay for the surgery if they got it. Not one of the 5 pups have it.
