Re: Collar breaking
aint hard to do , just be scared of using it and you can do it, remember, always shock him when he is wrong the instant he is wrong never wait till he quits what he is doing to fry him, or you can ruin him, he wont know what your shocking him for, more people do more harm than good fry him when he don't know what your frying he for and he will get where he wont hunt, wont leave the truck, respect it , its a great tool but it can also ruin you
Re: Collar breaking
Thanks I run deer hounds they can't do much wrong lol I'm just really talking for getting dog up for running all night. I been messing with dogs over 30 years and most my dogs just run and come home but now days u need to keep eye onthem more. I don't want to shock them when running but will tone them and holla just wondering how most guys do it. Most my dogs handle good but some don't want to quit.
Re: Collar breaking
Get you a 30 foot rope and some treats. Call the dog to you, make him come then treat. When he comes well put the collar on him, call, tone when he comes reward. Do it several times with the rope on. When he is doing well let him off the rope. Call, tone then light shock if he does not come. The first time you shock it would be best if the rope is on so he won't hide.. Treat when he comes which can be petting at this time. Repeat. When he is distracted by something else call, tone and light shock. He will learn to come on call and tone. If the rest of his home work has been done he is ready to take hunting. I use the tone for most of my breaking very little shocking if a dog is taught right. I can call my dogs off a jump bobcat race with the tone and calling. Dogs will come to you with just the tone from long distances. Most of my deer breaking is done with the tone on walks with young dogs from my house. Dewey
Re: Collar breaking
Nrutt you run weed eater cord before ? I know it doesn't get them out of the woods but helps when they are crossing a rd to catch them. I have several that are hard to stop and I run about 30 ft of weed eater cord on them. It doesn't hang or knot up. When they cross a rd I go to grabbing cord. It works. Works good on young dogs that are a little hard to handle. But again it doesn't get them out of the woods if they are still running. I've been out after dark many night after deer hunting wishing they would shut down and come to the truck. But if they did on their on I wouldn't have them any way. Good luck with that collar breaking.

Re: Collar breaking
I've chased deerhounds around at crossings all my life, weedeater strings and all!!! Got the collars last year and did similar to what Dwalton explained. Made ALL the differance in the world, at a crossing 2 I just have to call or tone the others take a little shock sometimes. When I'm catching them up at dark if they're close enough to hear me calling, I can make them come. Sometime I have to get a little hot on them but they will come. It has made them SO much more enjoyable to hunt with and I will turn them out in places now I wouldn't befor.PS I have Garmins on them so I can see when they start coming so I know to hit them again or not
Re: Collar breaking
I've had coon dogs collar broke that I never had to put a hand on but I've never tried collar breaking my running dogs. I would see it as a big advantage if they were. Especially the way the land issues are in the south now with all the people who don't want dogs on their land.

Re: Collar breaking
Thanks for posts I've used weed water cord plenty but for more scary dogs I can't catch but I'm more talking about when they get in a piece of ground and u can't get in there if they ain't running and I want to go home they have ran long enough most will come easy over 900 yards if hear me. So I know the hard headed ones can hear too. Ill try cord method with some of my older ones and see how that works. I have alpha and can see if they r coming or not. I guess my main question was can u make a 5 year old handle like this with out taking hunt out of him. Or should I just start all my pups on tone shock. Thanks for posts

Re: Collar breaking
Nrutt, it is my older ones a 4 & 5 year old males that caught on on the quickest and they were also the hardheadest. They did get confuses some and were afraid to leave me to start off with some, thought I'd ruined them but I just would turn out a younger dog that I hadn't worked with at all and they'd take off with it. Didn't take long for them to figure it out and now they are back to there old self exept now when I call they come, took less and less juice as hunting season went by. One of them got collar wise though, don't have enough alphas to go around and he didn't have one on, he blew by me standing in the road at the crossing with me screaming at him going into a big wilderness area swamp, crossed the river and was gone for 3 days befor he came back. But that happened all the time befor the alphas.
Re: Collar breaking
Yea I wouldn't trade my alpha for nothing I run 12 tt10 with no beep beep I hadn't had any troubles yet knock on wood. I wont turn one out with out ole Garmin best thing ever when works I can't see them coming out with anything much better for awhile.

Re: Collar breaking
I've had problems, showing dog in one place and not moving, have to catch dog turn off collar and handheld and back on, sometimes have to do it twice, have to tape up charging contacts or two of them will do it every time, one has already been replaced new one did it first time out! I never turn one out without a beep beep !!! But it hitting against the Alpha may be the problem. Like you said though when it works I love it. How much range do you get on the alpha there, here at about a mile in these thick woods we start getting ? A lot
Re: Collar breaking
I used to have right much communication issues but I changed all my ID numbers all close together with truck antenna I won't loose anything most of time until 2 miles but have picked up 6 miles. Depends on time of year. I'm in VA where u from.

Re: Collar breaking
I'm in fla. hunt in Nat. Forest I can stay within a mile of my dogs most of the time except when they get in that swamp then there is nothing I can do about it if they get in there but wait for them to come back, it's big and you can't get into it from the other side it's all private property. Used to could get in there and cut them off on the edge of the swamp but the dam u s forest service closed all the roads going to it on our side Now I just have to wait and hope a gator don't eat em befor they get back. Have lost two to gators in last six years there. With the shock collars I kept them out of there pretty good this year.
