Postby youngduke » Fri Feb 28, 2014 1:25 pm

I am looking for an older coon hound. a dog that will strike a coon. I currently have one hound and he is just a youngster but will track and tree I just cant get him to strike so im looking for a little help with an older dog. im still new to hound hunting and wanna hit it hard and catch some coons. I don't care what breed the dog is as long as it strikes and wont run trash. feel free to message me if you have anything.

Free cast or road him, if anything he will get some exercise. Get some coons under his belt and I bet he will start opening up off the box. If he doesn't start to strike just keep him on the ground.

thank you for the advice, he is getting better. I would still like to find a female that knows what she is doing just to have 2 dogs. I don't like running one dog

In all reality, the chances of getting a good older dog is pretty slim, even if you fork out some cash. I don't care what anyone says, a hound hunter will never get rid of a good dog. There are rare occurences i.e. Mike Kemp who breeds and hunts the dogs he sells but your looking at 3k for a 6-8mo. When I first started I wanted a bunch of dogs, but turns out it was easier to work with just one young dog. Hunt the crap out of this dog, it takes time and a ton patience, but once he gets the hang of things, pick up another pup, and you have a pack started.

All old dogs were once young dogs. Keep working this dog and putting him on coons. Pretty soon he will be your old dog and you will be adding new young dogs to your pack.

my dog got after one this morning but the coon held up in a big old spruce and we couldn't see anything. so would going out with people that have good dogs be a good idea? as in maybe my dog could pick up on a few things?

It sounds like hes doing a pretty good job of it. The more he learns by himself the better he will be. If he's able to start, trail and tree his own coons there isn't much he would learn from an older dog. It probably won't hurt to run him with an older dog every once in a while but remember that he can pick up bad habits just as easy as good ones.

yeah I just thought about the bad habits. I got lucky with this dog. I just wanna find another dog. the last race we were on, he beat the older top dog to the tree ever with crossing creeks so he is doing much better. i just hate runnin one dog, even finding another dog that does what my dog does would be nice. i had a good old dog but i had to sell him due to truck problems and not being able to hunt but he used to pull the coons out of the tree if it was low enough so im kinda looking for something like that. but thank you guys for the advice and if you know of anyone that has any decent dogs (young or old)please let me know.

No criticism here just wondering why you would like to stay away from just running one dog on coon?

No that answer makes perfect sense, I run two dogs for similar reason. I feel my two are consistently testing eachother
