Oklahoma bobcat guys?

Post by brycejohnson »

Are there any guys running cats in Oklahoma? I am living close to Ada and don't know anyone who is and would like to meet somebody who does. I have plenty of property to hunt. Just haven't heard of anyone. Anybody around?

Well...I'm from Oklahoma ...okmulgee to be exact, I am a "Guy" and do own hounds...the bobcat part is still up for discussion. I've coon hunted for around five years now, prior to this new found addiction I had beagles throughout my youth. I hear of a fella named Clyde Lawson from my hometown of collinsville who seems to be the real deal in bobcat hunting. I have never met him but have creeped around this forum for the last few years and have seen lots of knowledgeable information from him. Also there is another gentleman by the name of Ted Smith. Also never met but have offered to put him up at my place near the publiic hunting land here in okmulgee but work and "life" has gotten in my way of any further communication. I hope neither man minds I've "put there names out there" but from what correspondence I've seen from them they both seem like stand up guys and do seem to know their stuff.I'm in the process of trying to escape to the quachitas...if I ever make it ill try to look you up,
Alot closer to Ada there, then here! Best of luck, and the offer stands for you as well as MR Smith. My yard has plenty of "tent space" and the Mrs hunts just as hard as myself, so no issues there!

Why not start a Cat hunters gathering based in Oklahoma, the Quachita National Forest is certainly big enough. Doesn't look like The South Texas gathering is going to happen, so lets start one over in you alls neck of the woods. It would be a good chance for all to meet and get acquainted.
What's you guys thinking about this, I'll do my part, whatever it takes.

Count me in on helping to put together a "Cat Hunters Get to Together"!

Marion G. hosted one about 5-6-7 years ago at this home place and about 50-60 hunters showed. The Lady's bought a covered dish, and there were 3-4 of us that deep fried crappie filets for the group and a great vistation was had by all!

There is a great camping site called "Billy Creek Campground" in the mountains about due East of Talhania, OK about 20-30 miles that would be a perfect place to gather. There's available camp sites with or with out electric/water for fee or primitive without a fee.

Would need to check with them for available dates and details, which I could do and post for everyone.

Good hunting in about every direction on public land with descent access for the most part. If there is moisture in area, some great cat races can be had.

June would be great time for weather if there is a normal in weather this year.

Have hunted that area and always found bobcats, getting them treed is another matter!

If we could plan far enough in advance, would attempt to gather enough crappie filets for everyone to enjoy. Plus there are a number of hunters that love to fish for this type of fish and would assist I believe?

keep me posted,

Ill do what I can to get this off the ground! Now...I gotta let y'all know...the only bobcat my hounds have seen had tire marks on them, or they were slipping through the slough behind the pens! Like i said before though, I've been watching you guys from the sidelines for years and would love to meet everyone. My name is Colby pascoe and you can contact me at 918 530 7979 almost anytime. I do work full time as a bodyman so that will dictate how much time I can spend shooting the breeze in the ouachitas! But if we get a date set ill blow what little vacation I get on it. Let me know what I need to do to be of use!

Watch yer topknot.

Bobcat Hunters,

Just received call from Mr. Don Stuckey discussing having a first annual Oklahoma Bobcat Rendezvous in SE Oklahoma--this will be opened to any one to come and participate.

Dates will be decided ASAP, and will be between May 20th through June 8th? This should be good timing to run some cats + good weather conditions for that area. Days not to hot and nights good and cool with hopefully some moisture where we can have a cat race or two?

If any one has thoughts as to dates, let me know?

Discussion was to have a Friday, Saturday, & Sunday get together for meeting and visting. With some hunting to take place for those who wish to do so? Weekend dates will be picked and posted ASAP so everyone will be able to make plans.

Location was chosen to be in SE Oklahoma as cat numbers are down in Western Oklahoma plus it has been and is so dry there. SE Oklahoma has thousands of acres of public land to hunt plus a wetter climate conducive to running a bobcat.

Honobia, OK will be the center of where we chose, and there is camping facilities with electric/water for daily fee. Or many areas to camp in the area where we will have the headquarters set up. Don advised that he has large tent where we can meet and have our functions.

There is number of rivers plus Broken Bow Lake, Pine Creek Lake, Sardis Lake--all within 20-30 mile of where we will gather, if you wish to enjoy some great fishing while in the area.

We should see the temperature range of 70-80 during the day, falling into the high 40's to mid 50's at night.

Turkey season will be completed, squirrel season on(but few squirrels likely), with many acres of hound hunting country to run Mr. Bobcat. With very few people or cars to have to contend with while hunting.

Please tell all you know and discuss the interest you all would have for doing this? Then contact myself, Don Stuckey, & the other Gentlemen that have expressed interest on this site providing feed back as to if the time frame would fit, what you would like to see happen, and anything other comments.

Email me at ccwlawson@aol.com or call me at 918-850-3421(you can text me at that same number)----would like to hear from you to determine interest and numbers that would be attending?

Thank you,

Clyde Lawson

We realize that Memorial Day is the 26th of May, so we are setting the dates of May 30 through June 1st, 2014 as the dates for the 1st annual Oklahoma Bobcat Rendezvous. You hound men set back these dates and give Clyde or me a call, e-mail or a PM, if you and yours plan to attend. We've got to know how many fish we've gotta catch.
We are looking for sponsors, so if you've gotta an idea you want in , let us know. Carnivore and DU Supply, Running Walker beer, might take note along with any others who would like the opportunity to advance your advertising with OBR, May 30th-June 1st 2014.
Mark your calendars, leg up your hounds, practice up on your story telling and come join us for a fun weekend.

I think you Oregon guys should just move the West Coast Gathering to Oklahoma and join forces. I mean, they both start with "O" so what more do you want? It would sure be a lot closer for some of us.

Yes sir David. All year, night or day.public land regulations vary from spot to spot but as far as private land you can pursue even without any permits or b.s. the Odwc (Oklahoma dept. Of wildlife conservation, not to be confused with Oregon! ) is very strict however on their tagging policies for harvested cats. But those who play by the rules have no trouble. The tags are even free from any game warden or dept employee. We okies really got it good as far as the hound world goes! Hope to see ya around ...I got a book that needs signed! :-)

Clyde emailed me back today. Apparently he is heading to honobia to check/finalize arrangements will advise as he goes.

Have a good weekend folks.the weather sure is nice where I sit!
