amatuer question of the day

ok heres the amatuer question of the day. what are people referring to when they call their hound a gyp??

so its just a regular term for a female hound then nothing special behind the meaning

I was always under the inpression the term meant young unbred female....like a heifer or filly.....etc Like Buckshot has defined here:

comes from "gypsy" for haven't settled down yet. we all know some who've been bred but haven't settled down yet!
It not just hounds. Other dog breeders use the term to.
The painter Jackson Pollack had a a female mutt named "Gyp." If you look closely at some of his paintings, you can see some stray fur from her...

In my neck of the woods gyp is a female dog of any age regardless of her age. I know different words have different meanings in different regions. But gyps here are female dogs wether they are 2 hours old or 10 years old.

Same here now as in Kkohnke's neck of the woods but I can remember when a jyp was an unbred female. The term for a female that already had puppies was bitch, still hear it used sometimes but not much, mostly older houndsmen.
