Dangerous?
Dangerous?
I have never messed with any of these, but have heard from some that the coon is the most dangerous. Others tell me that is just a Cockins and bull story. But what is your opinion, and do you have any experience with any of them?

I voted for badger because I am pretty well convinced they are the meanest little cusses around. I have never even seen a wild bear, well I guess I saw a cub once, so I can't honestly comment, but I can say that I have never had a coon try to attack me before. Before I started hunting with dogs all I ever used was a Mag light and a .22, and never had one try to attack me unless it was cornered. I have had several badgers come racing out of their dens after me. I say badger any day.

Let me see your war face!!!
I've shot a coon in the side of the head with a .22, had it fall about 15-20 feet, and it still came after me and my dogs on the ground. After seeing something like that, it's hard to imagine the pain tolerance they have. I know this topic was made because of mine and Catch's
about it in the Cage. I think Bears are more dangerous but a coon is meaner and tougher. So if the question is which is more tough, I'd say coon for sure. Badgers and Wolverines are crazy as hell and are pound for pound the toughest animals in North America.

Good post Pete, I've never had a dog killed by a coon either but I've seen it happen and it happens pretty often. Coon climb on top of a dog's head drown them in the water all the time.

I'm going with a badger.. But I've never had any experience personally with that critter.
my buddy got chased out of the woods by one, He watched it cross the road and was "goin in after it" . I laughed when he told me the story of him Shooting a pistol behind him, While High stepping Screaming and running back to the road at the same time.. Badger lost..
I'm not a bear hunter and have only been around a handful.. I imagine it's just a matter of time before you learn about the mean ones. I watched one get really pissed off that I shot him once..
Sure Glad he Thought that tree shot him and not me..
Not too worried about a Coon, I"ve already had both Hands chewed up by a Coon.. Except for getting a nasty infection from the Bites it wasn't that bad.. I'm not saying it was a Pleasant experience.. Probably more along the lines of reasonably annoying, and Like Pete said There were moments of Girl like screaming involved...
I think a better way to judge this would be to judge the amount of "Girl Screaming" involved

a 30-40 lb bore river bottems monster coon is toughf enoughf and strong enoughf he is like a walken tom mtn lion/ all bussness and don`t put up with no guff from dogs and he can drown a dog and he might just reach out and grab a hounds dog collar and dragg him into the slue and drown hin out right ! If wounded and your there when he comes down out of the tree/ he may come right for ya ears pinned back and serriouse/ but ya can get him too change his mind between a big limb and your dogs helpen ya out.
a 40-80 lb bear can kill a dog but again bear dogs not dogs that run an tree on bear/ beardogs will strech him out and gethim by the trouth and kill him usually.
A badger is not interested in people nor dogs but they don`t need too be fooled with let me tell ya and they are pound for pound closely as terrifying as a 110-130 lb wolverine can be and he can take down a elk calf and a full grown doe deer !A whissleing marmmen is also a bad boy and I`d leave him alone as well
as for which is baddest/ any one of em if ya get em rilled up they can be a load ! I`ve been cub bear slapped and it hit me on the butt and spun me up a hill and knocked me out instantly I saw a collydeascope of starrs in all colors !
I think out of these 3 a Badger takes the title. I've caught all 3 in a cornfield and would take the coon or bear, hands down. Badgers are pissed off little animals.
Coon are NOT that tough. A good coon dog will make short work of an average sized coon on dry ground. A big coon can be a different story, but a couple of dogs should easily be able to handle one. Coon can drown a dog, but that is more a product of a terrain than toughness. I've also seen (not heard of) dogs drowning in a lake that was frozen around the edges but not the middle with a coon.
Most bear are pretty easy. They don't go out of their way for a scrap, but if you bring the scrap to the wrong one you MIGHT have your hands full.
I had an old coon dog in High School named Bud. He was a big old ploddy type hound but could tree his fair share of coon and just a character to be around. In Bud's life he caught all three of these critters at different times. He got his ass handed to him by a 37lb coon, go the piss beat out of him by a badger, and also got SHREDDED by a big cub bear in the fall. I think if you asked him, he'd say they were all pretty tough.
When I brought him to vet after the bear they asked how big the bear was that did this type of damage. They were trying to figure out how much dope I had smoked when I said "65 lbs".

I have had experience with a lot of bear, a lot of big boar coon, and a big boar badger. I'm glad coon don't get 100 pounds, or I'd need tougher dogs. I've seen them run off after getting stretched, and it totally amazed me. I dumped a pack of well seasoned bear dogs on a badger one time, and pound for pound, that was the meanest thing on 4 legs I ever saw. The stench from his glands when he got angry made you gag involantary, I was warned about that years before I smelled it. The thing made it under a windfallen tree, and would jump out and bite dogs in the legs and chest and tear. The only time they could grab ahold of him is when he was attatched to a dog and they backed up dragging him out. They finally got him strtetched, but I stepped in and put a bullet in him to end it. He was a worthy opponent, and deserved no less. He gained the respect of my dogs, and myself, I thought it would be a quick fight, but I will admit I was wrong. Every dog was shot with pennicilan for a week. The stink on them lasted that long too. I have been told boar badger, and wolverine will back up a bear from their stench, not just their disposition. I believe that whole heartedly, a skunk does not compare.

voted earlier and am kinda shocked at the replies I am seeing. Is one dog gonna kill an 80lb bear, no. One dog is capable of killing a coon and a badger consistently. Baders are ornery little dudes, but no comparison to the wolverine is even fair. The endurance, speed, and strength of a bear so far outclasses the others there is no comparison, we are talking about overgrown rodents compared to a bear! Hit all three with your truck, which one has a better chance of running off after? Bear is way to strong, fast, and durable to be put in the category of badgers and coons. Although the latter two may very well put up a better fight than a lion.

Larry we are talking about a little bear here. While I don't disagree that they have speed, endurance and strength they are NOT very dangerous. Little bear tend to want to run, not fight. Badgers do NOT run, period. I've never seen a dog that could stretch a full grown Badger conistantly. In fact I don't know If I've ever seen one stretched by a dog/dogs alone. I've never seen a wolverine, but I've heard they are in a class above a Badger.
Note I am talking about animals here, NOT college sports cause the Badgers always kick ass on those piddley Wolverines.

I have never seen/caught a badger...
I have seen coons bay up and kick ass for a long time before dogs can get them "handled"
I have seen dogs killed by 80lbs bears... Course, most of those were bayed up in something.. culverts, logs, caves etc...
Seen 3 hounds in the last year killed by juvenile lions too.. heard of about 6 more... those last 6 though were just talked about through the grapevine...
I'm not going to vote...
