Car Sickness and Long Distance Hauling

Post by bearhuntermatt »

I have a male dog that is about 16 months old and is making great progress to being a really good dog. The only problem I have with him is getting car sick on longer hauls. When take him hunting he doesn't get sick from the house to the mountain and doesn't mind getting in the truck. I recently took him on a mostly interstate trip that was 4 hours each way and did fine. Took him to get hunted for a few weeks and on the way to drop him off and returning got sick each time, only throwing up water. On this trip its almost all twisty back roads over the mountains for about hour and half. I own a littermate and she never gets sick. Is there anything could do to help him out? Im planning to drive to Utah and bear hunt for a week next year and taking a few young dogs, him, his sister, and a new pup I have. I have never hauled dogs that far before. Plan to let them out and stretch bathroom every 4 to 6 hours.

Thanks
Matt

first, don't give him food or water just before the trip.
Second, ask your vet for sedatives or motion sickness pills--dramamine will last about 4 hours, so you will need to stop every four hours to give him another.
Most dogs eventually outgrow this.
Oddly, vehicles with smoother rides tend to aggravate the problem--keep him out of the Cadillac and in a pickup with old springs.
Some dogs are made worse by the visuals from a moving vehicle. Drape the dog box with a sheet so he can't see out, using care he doesn't overheat and/or dehydrate.
Put a plastic tarp on the bottom of the dog box to make cleanup easier.
Drive slower until he gets better at riding. Take frequent breaks.

I have 2 females 5 years old that get sick as soon as they go in the box. Truck don't even have to move. They drool like a water faucet running out of their mouth. Once they hit the ground they are fine. They have done it since pups and one of these females I have a couple pups off of her and they both do it. It's so bad it looks like something's leaking from my truck when they are in it.

A friend of mine has a redtick female like that. She loves to go, as soon as the tailgate drops, she is loading up. But she drools nonstop. Anybody have any luck finding a remedy for this?

I think he will get over it, most do. He did ok on the interstate trip and that will be similar to most of the trip to get to Utah i think.I've only had one that didn't and she started drooling as soon as you put her in the truck, hauled her hunting three days a week for three months,I didn't like her good enough to put up with the mess.

Yeah hoping he does get over it after this year. It will be about all interstate till I get into Utah. His only drool but its just smaller amounts and hes not soaking wet when get him out of the box. I had my sides closed to help reduce the wind going through the box

as a commercial fisherman i can tell you the more air the better when you have motion sickness one of the first signs is sweating or overheating .
