Re: The TWO Greatest Tools for a Bobcat Houndsman
A little COMIC Relief is always good!
That Truck, Light, bullets, understanding Wife, etc are all things which may be "Essential" to your Bobcat Hunting.....but that was not my Question.
The Two Greatest Tools now available for a Bobcat Houndsman......Mr. Robby is thinking the same way my Dad did, "You have to KNOW what your Hounds are doing when after the Short Tail".
Those "Boots" so many of you keep bringing up darn sure will not help you where SOUTH TEXAN and We hunt! You just are NOT going to be able to Stay in sight of your Hounds in the Coverts hunted across lots of the Country. Also do to the Climate (Heat) many of us have to hunt at night.
Now for Dad, and he was not a person to embrace "Progress" with open arms; TWO tools that he did embrace and used to evaluate his Hounds performance and developmental progress were the Garmin and an Audio Recorder.
To be able to verify with your eyes what your ears were "Seeing" during a Race, then being able to replay that Race to confirm or change your thoughts on what Hound was doing what within the Pack are things that Dad used extensively in his evaluation of his Hounds.
Recording a Race then replaying is much like reading Ole David's Book.....you just keep picking up things every time you read it.
You may find that the Hound you thought was your best was really only the BEST at making the Most Noise, that Spot barked once on the pick up then Ole Jubal made the woods ring.....but Jubal was really telling you that he smelt the Track where Spot had already found it. You missed this when listening to the Race in REAL time but caught it when listening to the recording.

Re: The TWO Greatest Tools for a Bobcat Houndsman
I figure patience cause as all of us knows dogs will be dogs one time or another, second judgment, being able to understand which one will make a bobcat dog and which one wont, all wont make it and a hunter must be able to distinguish this
Re: The TWO Greatest Tools for a Bobcat Houndsman
Wow, I never would have guessed the audio recorder was in the everyday arsenal of the old master cat hunter. I sure can see it though. Especially after reviewing Budd's videos, sure can see how it might tell you something you missed. And it just allows you to think more about things. I know that, after having worn out my recordings of the Clay hounds.

Just curious, What type recorder do you think would reach out the best? I've tried before and all I can hear is the Strike and the Tree unless they are very close to the road when running.

Re: The TWO Greatest Tools for a Bobcat Houndsman
MR. Brad, we use a cheap MP3 Recorder/player from Radio Shack...about $80.00. It has a HD internal Mike with a Dictation setting. It will record audible Races out to about 500 yds in flat country, on a GOOD hearing night.
When we had an external HD Mike mounted inside a Hard Plastic Funnel placed on the roof of the Truck we have picked up good audio out to about 800 yards.
I have not used my Smart phone to record a Race, but have recorded Dad's funeral service with it and it sure did a good job. Also I have seen and heard some good recorded races from the NW that were made with Smart Phones.
David, was that a reminder that I have forgotten to copy some more Races for you......seriously I will try to get that done soon it will include Dad's last two Races, thanks to CRA for recording them.
