Hello,
I have decided to get back into hounds and have been fortunate to recieve a great deal of advice on bobcat hunting as this was always a weak point for me and my dogs. All that being said I have read Mr. Leonards cat training article and it will help a great deal but what about breaking scents? I am wondeting if anyone uses them before ever hunting a young dog and what ways people use them. As always thanks for your time and help.

the only breaking method for pups that I think hold any water is the one that John Wick talks about in his book and it is done with deer glands otherwise just field breaking on the real deal with a shock collar Mike

Save your money, breaking scents are a waste of time none smell like the real thing. Exposure to the real thing is only way. If you run your young dog with a clean hound breaking becomes alot easier. Andy

Copy that andy I jave never used them before I was just curious other folks thoughts I will be starting the pup on her own. I dont plan on hunting with others to much there is always drama I dont care to deal with. I have a good bobcat man south of me who will let me tag along but I wont take any dogs because its more fun to hunt than scwable over who's dog is gonna start and all that. Thanks for your time and.info.

If you don't have Johns books, they are worth the price just for his puppy deer gland method. I love taking pups on their first hunt with them already bringing with them some real bad memories associated with deer scent. It doesn't mean they will never be convinced to take one, but it sure is a simple thing to keep pups like that off of deer. I love the method and would not raise batch of puppies without using it. I have seen a pup jump over a fresh deer trail in the snow to keep from coming in contact with it. Have seen other less graphic indications that they came to the woods with an aversion to deer scent.bigfootexp wrote:the only breaking method for pups that I think hold any water is the one that John Wick talks about in his book and it is done with deer glands... You won't have to buy any bottled scent. All you need is a deer to collect the glands from. Preferably dead. You can collect the glands and freeze them until you are ready for them, and between lessons.

I agree with Twist. There is no substitute for the real thing. Scent glands are a waste of time. They rarely do anything and if you rely on them, you will be sorely disappointed. I use the real thing. It is 100% guaranteed to work. I have not had a single trash race in the past 15 years.
