After hunting, I spend the next few days with tweezers. I have a hound that will lift his paws so I can pull out the thorns. I have seen many hounds shut down after a day of hunting.
The guy I hunt with on horseback, goes all day and into the night without taking a drink of water.

I would say that is probably some of the toughest hunting one can do , that country is some bad stuff and would probably abt kill me ! man has to be tough to follow hounds there, and the dogs got to be tough also, bet it takes awhile for one to make doing that ! here where I hunt has nothing like that ! I have watched them on national geographic putting radio collars on them , and used dogs to tree them with in the snow and I was very impressed of the toughness of the people and the dogs, guess its another day at the office for them, I wouldn't make it 100 yards in that stuff

her where I live I hunt only grey fox and bobcat, no lions, people say they see them all the time here , I have hunted bobcat and fox here all my life and its strange I have never seen a track or seen one run over on the hwy with as many as people say they see one is bound to get run over haha, the dogs you guys use are I would probably say is the best of the best, bred for being able to really smell something and stay hooked up to him with rentless pressure to mmake him tree ! I have used running hounds all my life and what I hunt for is the music and the chase, grey fox here will run all night, and the bobcats will give you a good run also, when I first started using this web site I couldn't believe most everyone used tree hounds but now I know why there nose is stronger than a running hounds and there not as wide of a runner, one has to stay glued to the track with very few loses and not much time on a lose and rentless pressure ! someday I would love to go on a hunt to watch this, I know it would be action packed, and to only watch the dogs work and to meet the men who do this, I don't care about killing anything just to watch, cause I have killed enuf in my lifetime so I will leave something for the youngesters

The cowboy that goes all day without water, runs running dogs mixed with tree hounds, but more towards the running dog side. His family has had them for many years.
I like to listen to a long race too.

FM's granddaughter found the video that I made on youtube and contacted me and really enjoyed it. She showed it to to all the grandkids and his kids.. and said they would make sure he seen it.

Thanks for sharing, I wish I had kept a better record of hunts gone past. I never really took many pictures when I was younger. After digging a lot of graves I realized that I wish I had more images of lions and dogs. it was great to here of this oldtimer.

That was a nice video Brett! ALL of the old timers and the sure enough real deals that aren't looking for notariety and fame, all hunt lions for the same reason - the dogs. It's rare in today's hound environment to find a young hunter that isn't making it about the dead lion.

You're welcome to check in with me anytime! Just not after 6:30 in the evening- I go to bed early, so's I can wake up early. Probably shouldn't call or come by before 9:30 in the morning - I have to rest a little later than I used to. Any time's good. Just watch the time in the late morning. I've usually put in a full day while you young bucks are still asleep, so I catch a cat nap from about 10:30 till noon. After lunch, since I've lived down on this desert all my life I get me one of them siesta naps- from about 12:30 to around 4:30 while it's hot. My wife doesn't care for our supper getting interrupted, so watch the time. Anyways, anytime is good for me!

I've been reading here awhile now but it is this thread that finally encouraged me to join. I really wasn't sure how much we all had in common b/c I don't trail cats or bears with my dogs and there really isn't a section here for what I do. After reading this thread and watching Brett's video, I realized just how much we all have in common.

I just got back from a 3 day aoudad hunt out in the Sanderson area. I am still in awe at the size and ruggedness of the country. I spent 3 days hiking, glassing and hunting. I never saw a sheep and only found fresh sign twice but it was the hunt and the country that I enjoyed the most. I think that we all sometimes forget that it's about the hunt and not the kill. Thanks to this thread, all of your posts and my "unsuccessful" sheep hunt for making me remember this.

Thanks to all of the old timers for forging the way and thanks to those on here for keeping that explorer spirit alive. My recent experiences out there have rekindled it in me.

You are so right...hunting is never about the killing. Hunting is about the chase, good friends, God's beautiful country and a reverence for the animals we pursue. If we are blessed to be hunting with hounds, just seems to sweeten the experience.

I just received a message on my youtube channel from one of Mr. Galvan's grandchildren

My Papa (Mr. F.M. Galvan) passed away just the other day 1/24/2015. He went fighting, but peacefully surrounded by his whole family. I will cherish ur video forever, he was a hell of a man and I still hear stories of his hunting days from total strangers till this day about how great he was. Thank you again for giving myself and family a great memory of him. - Nichole

We are loosing these old timers pretty fast. I'm fortunate that I had the opportunity to visit with Mr.Galvan.. I know there must be some more like him I just wish I had the time and resources to find them and get to talk to them.
