st memorable shot while cat hunting

Post by Old dog »

tell us about you're once in a life time shot. mine was while hunting with varminator. it was one of those nights when the brush was so wet that you just as well jump in the creek before you go to the tree. we had been to a tree or two already and I was soaked to the bone. they treed fairly close but on a steep incline and my pants were stuck to my leg making every step a monumental task. the big guy beat me to the tree as usual and I was only about half way to the tree when he hollers " are you going to get you're ass up here and shoot this cat" he did that a lot as it was his way of saying " I beat you to the tree again.na na nana" any way, I am clinging to a tree with one hand to keep from sliding back to the road and I shined my lite in his direction to let him know where I was and when I did, I seen the cat way up at the top of the tree swaying in the wind. so I got one hand holding the tree and the gun layed across it with the light alongside the gun. the cats eyes are swaying like a pendulum and I don't know how far it is but it is a poke for sure. he could see me staying in one place and tells me to hurry up so I holler back" you want me to shoot it?" he says yes get up here and shoot it for the young dogs. so I timed the shot for when the eyes just about swung into the cross hairs and let fly. the lights went out and brad yells "the sob almost landed on me!" I allways refer to this shot when my marksmanship is brought up.. whats you're story?

You were just lucky, Skip!!!!

My Most Memorable (at this moment) is when Cecil King And I were in Central Oregon cat hunting near Silver Lake, 40 some years ago.

We were only about a 1/2 mile west of the Town of Silver Lake, when we seen the track in the snow.(The country there is open with very little low sage and just a very few Juniper Trees). We turned loose and it was a smoker, the dogs left screaming but went out of hearing while still in sight?? We seen them swinging to our right then start jumping and circling a Juniper Tree. I grabbed my rifle and headed to them. As I got closer I could start hearing the dogs treeing.

Now my shot!! When I was about 75 ft. from the tree, I seen the cat moving around and then jump! I shouldered my rifle, and shot when it was sailing threw the air and hit it in the head.
Although it just grazed it and knocked it out for a couple seconds, the dogs got it so that was good enuff!!!! Ya, It was a very "Good" shot Skip! But tell someone your going to!!

How about "shooting your last round"!!! I've layed on my back praying before( especially with a pistol) and still couldn't cut threw the limbs and hit it. Had to walk off, or go get more if I had them near.

lmao@ varminator... you knew my foot was crippled and I was in pain that day so you lead us up a rocky ass road, then you call me like a dog! I can still hear you now "cmon Kelly, cmonrose, cmondaisy, cmon skip!" you say it was because of the getters but I still think it was a bully thing. I had every intention of shooting you're ass when I got up there and the only thing that saved you was that I didn't know where we were and would of got lost on my way out.that and you wouldn't get out from behind the truck.lol you were lucky that day but you were double lucky that I didn't remember that bull shit when that wampus cat came after you or I wouldn't have saved you from him. quit bringing up them negative vibes man.lol..what leakes me off the most is that I don't remember this kind of stuff when I get a chance to get even with you lol

The truth is, that we started a cat and the dogs tracked it down the canyon and jumped going around a rock knob. They went out of hearing so we drove around to listen. the dogs were treed so we started walking from there. The ground was steep, so coming back I side hilled to a ranch road, which had just been rocked with pit run. As I was walking I seen a "Getter"(cyanide gun) sign. I started hollering for the dogs and picked up the Pace. I hollered to Skip c'mon ,"GETTERS" and he screamed back, Ill "GET THERE" stop yelling you S.O.B.. I keep calling all the way back and I could here him, cussing back at me. He had no idea why I was hollering for him and the dogs till he "FINALLY" got there. Skip does have a bone spur that gives him hell and those big rocks were killing him!

I called the Rancher about the Getters, and he said that the Trapper had left the signs when he pulled out, and that there was no Getters there.

We practice catch and release, and have for years!! We just try to take Toms if possible, and that's when, I feel the young dogs need one.

"Not enough Cats in Florida" ?? I heard wrong then ?? What part or is it the whole state ??

I smell what your stepping in, and your right not to kill them when their population is low or for that matter don't kill them "All" at anytime anywhere !!!

The Clays hunted Florida, and I've heard that the cats were plentiful in the area they went to.

Probably less than 10 counties, out of 67 ,in Florida offer any possibility for bobcat hunting with hounds. Lots of highways, developments, and posted land, that can't be leased. Forty years ago I usually caught 30 to 40 here where I live. Now I can't even turn a yard dog out. Traffic to bad. Our population has exploded. Yes, there is a sufficient population of cats in our state, but very few areas large enough to run them with hounds. I feel like if I have an area that I can hunt, with out problems, I need to be concerned with keeping game to run. I ain't never run a dead- un, and unlike my friend, Cary Clay, I ain't gonna eat one, long as there's beefsteak. Having said all this don't make it right or wrong, just my thoughts. Do what you want to,have fun. God bless. I'll hush now

Kind of funny, I seen this as though it was a headline:

St Memorable shot while cat hunting

And I am thinking, "Dang I never heard of him, but it is horrible that a Saint got shot while cat hunting."

John sometimes we like to name certain cats if we dont have dog enough to catch him. I will remember that name for some lucky bobcat: St.Memorable. I would sure think twice about letting St Memorable get shot while cat hunting.
