Bluetick on cats

Post by Redbonehunter12 »

Hello all, I am currently in college but upon graduation I will be immediately in the market for a hound, I think I want to try a bluetick on bobcats. Do you guys have any preferences? I don't know much about bluetick lines, but I hear smokey river, Cameron, and utchman being toosed around in bluetick lines. Also I am a fan of the darker colored blues with the tan trim so if either of these lines is more likely to give me something like that, that would be helpful. Thanks a lot

For bobcats, I would lean toward the Smokey River lines and if you can find them, a little Upson breeding sure doesn't hurt. As far as color, I would look closer at ability, intelligence and confirmation.
Good luck and Adios,

Thank you for the reply Mr. Roberson. Do you know where I can find any planned Smokey river/Upson litters in the next year or so? Or anybody to refer me to?

Redbone hunter you could save yourself years of frustration and thousands of dollars in dogs, gas and other expenses if you would do this one thing before buying your bluetick. Spend a year (or at least a few months) being a detective. Track down all the guys catching bobcats in Pennsylvania with blueticks. Then get your pup from those lines of blueticks.

The reason that I recommended the cross that I did as this cross has worked well with guys down here where we dry land and works well in Montana where there is a lot of snow. Dennis Upson in WI has used these dogs for coon and bear for years and if you go to the UKC site, there are quite a few guys using these hounds for coyote as well. Simply put, these are running blue dogs.
The reason I like these dogs is they are extremely athletic and run with their head up like a running walker. They are a little shorter eared than some guys want but ears have never caught many critters for me.

Mike Fairchild and Jim Bartley have dogs bred to run and both of them are in Michigan. They are on the UKC site and are breeders of blueticks.

Gary's description is right on.The Smokey River dogs are my favorite among registered dogs.A friend in Montana has a 3 week old litter now if you're interested .I know several other guys with good blues but they only breed when they need replacements.

I have some older uchtman x hammer that have done good for me, added some old smokey river via Buzz Anderson and the results are pretty nice.

Clint and Darlene Pierce have some nice blue dogs. I'm pretty sure they go back to the old Smokey River stuff. That's where I'd go if I was looking for a bluetick.
Montana Red Kennels - redbones that catch game and hold it until you get there.
