One thing I have noticed that the tendency to over run tracks and being mouthy show at a early age and no matter how much time you put on a dog they never get much better when it comes to over running. A dog running crazy in the check area babbling causes huge confusion. I'm sure there are people out there that will say you can correct dogs for over running but I say bull!!!! Babbling yes to a degree but I just as soon pull the pin on that dog and put my efforts and time into something that don't have them faults and if I choose to use the dog in my breeding program later on I wont have to worry about those faults resurfacing.

Bud,

Unless they have walked in our shoes they will never figure it out!!!!!   Dewy and Mark are as close as I have seen on here. There is no place in the country that you can never get a marked line. And one step further if a person absolutely needs a marked line to figure out the puzzle. He or she has pissed their pants for all real houndsmen to see.      Always good hearing from you. Good luck!!!!

Take care, Willie

Budd I agree with a lot of your opinion on dogs that over run the track. Also know that a steady hound that moves the track with few loses while catch bobcat.
My question is have you ever owned or hunted with a hound,or pack of hounds, that caught every bobcat or rabbit they jumped? I commend you for your breeding program & enjoy your posts very much. Thanks Al I welcome anyone who has hunted with or owned a hound, or pack of hounds, that caught every track they jumped to respond. Al

I shouldnt even waist my time on this as i know there will be some who call BS. I dont care just take it for what you want to make of it.
8 winters ago i had the pleasure of hunting with 2 of the best dogs i have had the pleasure to hunt with in my life. I had a couple of dogs in the mix but take no credit in the results. We hunted hard from the second week of season till the end of it. We hunted snow and bare ground both. The dogs ended up catching 61 cats got beat by 2 and one of those we ran the next morning and caught it (99% sure it was the same cat) all these cats were seen or heard in a hole. I realize they didnt catch every cat but if they were my dogs i would say close enough! I had a 28 in a row jumped and caught a couple winters ago but thats my personal best Im striving for dogs like my buddy had that winter. Anything is possible if you work at it! I am a firm believer of that !!!!!!!

Mark I don/t call BS ON THOSE NUMBERS. iI know some here have caught in the sixties. That is a fantastic season. Willie the brush does not hurt, it can help, at least that is my experience, here where I have hunted, wind falls , bluffs, dusty, frozen, or paved roads sure can make it tough to catch a dog wise cat. Mark were you hunting areas where those cats had been dogged hard, by that I mean not just treed and left sitting, but jumped & etc. However Willie that is not a 100% catch ratio, damn close. How many have you caught in a row Willie & what was your best total number for a season. Mark, don/t know how many of those were holes, don/t matter, I have put a bunch in holes in my days, most told me those don/t count, & I agree if the cat was not pressured to that hole, however if he went there to save his hide, I say count him. Thanks for posting Mark.Al

Don't run cats never have Al. And am beginning to believe no one else in Arizona does other than an occasional pop up. I have been waiting for some to come and tree a couple but no one shows up.   But don't bullchit yourself into believing. That if you were stupid enough to let me come and look at your dogs on one completed race. And pick one out to take home. That you wouldn't be with out your best dog. Providing there was one I cared to snap a leash on.

Willie, don/t mean to be disrespectful, but always suspected you had never ran very many bobcat. Don/t know if you realize how tough it is to get dogs that are as good on bobcat has those hounds of marks that treed 28 in a row, but will tell you I have probably never treed over half that in a row, before a bob made my dogs look bad. Thank you for being honest about your bobcat experience. Mark I have never doubted anything you told me about bobcat hunting. Dave Walker told me you were the real deal, have a great season. Al

Budd, when did you think speed killed cats? Let me take a wild guess: back when you were hunting bobcats. And specifically our bobcats that won't climb trees. I have had some extremely accurate track dogs, but I never started catching Great Lakes bobcats with consistency until I figured out you have to have a dog that can sprint faster than a bobcat can. Otherwise you have accurate tracking all day long. The cat is in control of the hunt and chooses the distance between himself and the dogs.

Al,You suspected that I didn't?????? The only thing that tells me is that you have read my posts on here. As I have always made it perfectly clear as to my back ground. So don't flatter your self by leading others to believe you've discovered some flaw in Willies character. You better stick with mastering reading the dogs. Before ya dabble with reading people. I wouldn't want ya to come up short twice. As many and myself have coddled ya long enough.

What you can't wrap your mind around and apparently never will. Is what it takes to catch cats or any critter is a top handler that decides what he chooses to catch. Followed by a well bred student to get the job done. And proof of your lack of this knowledge. Is people with talent have caught chit behind you and in your back yard. When you would try to have others believe the earth swallowed your chosen critter ( Bobcats ) and they were all but extinct. Now look long and hard and see if you can find anybody that knows my back ground. That can remotely say anything of the sort about me anywhere I ever turned a dog loose.

Willie you have sure never told me how much bobcat hunting experience you possessed,There was a time in my life when I possessed enough knowledge & health to train packs of straight cat dogs that caught enough cats to suit me. I have never claimed to be as talented as some & always stated I had to work harder than some to accomplish that. As for some catching cats behind me, dosen/t prove a thing, I have caught cats behind others, but realize that is just cat hunting. Willie there has always been cats here that can seem to disappear in thin air some days & I have been told by the best hunters in this area they have experienced the same thing at times. Al

" I will only say never seen a perfect bobcat hound, & if someone has a hound, or a pack of hounds, that catches 100% on bobcat , hunting in terrain like we have here in western Oregon, you are a blessed man."

"My question is have you ever owned or hunted with a hound, or pack of hounds, that caught every bobcat or rabbit they jumped?"

Al, these are your famous quotes. A guy expressed a problem with a hound over running and ruining races. Several with a boat load of experience. That you couldn't make a patch on their azz. Made a attempt to answer. And because of your lack of ability. Continue with your chit to discredit them. LMAO Since I have been on hear Dewy has put up with your B.S. Just accept it there are numerous people a lot closer to perfection than you could dream of being. But on a brighter note. Some go a life time and never know anymore than the day they started. At least you have figured which end of the dog barks.

Willie, Dewey & I have called a truce. Believe we both gave each other a hard time,at times, dewey will tell you he has been guilty of saying things just to get a good debate going. Regret I did not figure that out sooner. Dewey is a very talented hunter & DOG TRAINER, I have never doubted that. Wish him the best. Don/t know anything I could have added to the advise that had already been given to that hunter whose dog was over running the track. Was simply thanking those who offered the advise & stating something I have experienced. Willie, there are better cat hunters here than I ever was & if I told them I owned a bobcat dog that had never lost a jumped cat, they would know I had fell & bumped my head. Wish you the best, hope you make it out to hunt with Mark sometime. Al

They were Blankenship bred dogs and i believe the female was 5 years old and the male was 7. The male died last winter the female is still alive although not hunting anymore.

Al, i just count holed cats that are jumped when they go in and usually its after a hard race lol. These dogs are far from perfect and by what i read on hear shouldnt even be able to catch a cat in a pack let alone by themselves but they do somehow. I believe all dogs make mistakes in a cat race! Its how fast they overcome those mistakes that make them cat dogs IMO

A hound that can run a jumped cat with great speed will catch more cats. So when guys say speed dont catch more cats they have never been blessed to hunt with a dog of this calibur. If a dog can handle a jumped cat with great speed your percentage goes up in the terrien and conditions I hunt! Andy
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.
