puppy training issues?
I have two 4 month black n tan/walker crossed pups. I got some grawes bobcat scent and put it on a stuffed animal (one of my 2 yr old daughters toys...wife was not happy lol). Anyway at first the pups chewed it a little and played with it. But now they dont really care for it. Any suggestions? Also when I opened the bottle of grawes I noticed it smelled very strong. Is that normal?

Re: puppy training issues?
Those pups are very young, short attention span, like a preschool child. Very easy to over do training at that age, give them a little time. I believe Grawe makes some very good scent, however have never been a fan of using training drags. Good luck Al

Re: puppy training issues?
The only scent drag I have done so far is with a piece of bacon. They found it after sniffing it out for a while. All I have done with the grawes is put some on the stuffed animal and let them play with it. Would it be easier to start them on cats or coons? I think I can run my dogs any time of the year on coons where I live. I wouldn't mind running coons when cat season isnt open to keep them in shape. Or would that affect their cat hunting?
Re: puppy training issues?
Just work on Basic obedience, When the pups are around 6-7 months then work with them on the hunting stuff. If your new to hounds and don't have anyone else to run dogs with I would coon hunt them till next winter. Then Walk them out on Cat tracks till they can take them. The first two I would walk out from start to finish.

I know everyone has said grawes is the best training sent but was wondering the same. Started my pups on some home made sent from glands and pads and pups always did well. Tried grawes and they wouldn't open at all. To me it smells way to strong. Strong ammonia smell

Re: puppy training issues?
I picked up a dog once that supposedly been on a good number of cat. When I picked the dog up the guy handed me a bottle of that grawes sent thought that was a little funny for a dog that had been on the number of cat that he told me this dog had been on well I tossed that bottle in the pickup and forgot about it after a couple months I was not all that impressed with the dog frustrated I dug out that bottle of scent to do a little experiment and ran a pretty long drag all through the timber then roaded 3 of my dogs down the road when we hit a spot were I came across the road my 3 hounds did not want anything to do with it other than one that acted slightly interested seeing this I pulled out that dog that the bottle of scent came with roaded it down the road and when I got to the drag that dog took off like it was on a red hot track seeing this I refused to ever work a pup on scent. Nothing like the real thing jmo

Re: puppy training issues?
I was planning on walking out tracks with them when they are ready. I was walking my pups a few weeks and came across a bobcat track and those two little pups went crazy when they started sniffing it. Walked them on the track for a few hundered yards helping them. Then they lost interest.
Re: puppy training issues?
I never used any sent drags in the past until my last batch of pups. I think I'll stick to the real deal just thought I would try.
