mythbusters

Post by SECOND NATURE »

i guess this is where i should post this i am looking for info on saving gas mileage i would like to know if any have tried some of these miracle cures that are advertised do any work or is it all BS. Options with facts if possible items like computer chips or flow master exhaust k&n air filters the tornado any others if possible just thought if this was discussed it might shed some light on fuel consumption and save all us hunters a few pennies maybe what do you know lets here it :D

example i have a ford f150 single cab with 5.4 triton v8 i put a flow master exaust on it and was getting 14mpg now i get 15mpg this is not true just put this on here to show about what i was looking for

maybe it will help us all good luck. Larry

The cheapest and best item that I know to increase fuel economy is a block of wood under the gas pedal, watching your speed really helps, comp. chips work to some extent but are pricey, a good air filter is a good choice, let's the motor breath easier, tornado's work ok for the price, make sure your tires are inflated, less rolling resistance.
Buy a geo metro 46mpg or a vw jetta diesel 52mpg.

  OK captain obvious aka lion hunter I'm sure a peddle bike and a little red wagon might work also i could rig my dog in the wagon LOL i do not want a lesser vehicle i just want to know which is the best buy for fuel savings if the chip or anything else is worth it. at the way gas is sky rocketing it would pay for its self you know what i mean  some body must have tried these or other items with sucsess or failure.

I converted my Nissan Pickup to Natural Gas for about 500 bucks and 8 hours of work. You loose a little power but hey...NG is .63 cents in Utah right now and that verses 3.50 a gallon I can actually afford to go hunting!

Must be rocket science I never got too much differance from normal/ so i started walk hunten again from the house with one dog .

Ok, Let me put it this way, I put a good exhaust, k&n filter, and a throttlebody spacer on my 96 chevy and gained 3 mpg, I don't think a chip is worth the money in the long run, but I may be wrong on that, I went with the more pocket friendly upgrades and was satisfied with the results, on the 5.4 you might be able to program the fuel curve for the type of driving that you do and that would help. also bigger exhaust doesnt always help, you need a free flowing exhaust with the right back pressure for the engine to function better(I used high flow cat. and a flowmaster 3 chamber).

You might look at some ford forums, thay could tell you some more paticulars on your vehicle, and what works and doesn't work.

thank you i here what your saying a 3 mpg increase would be a great start and easier on the wallet but i was looking at the flow master cat back system for my truck on internet today and they were over 600.00 what would a chip cost? k&n air filter is about 300.00 at vip.

I wouldn't go cat back system, I would buy a high flow cat and a flowmaster muffler and have them put into your existing pipe, summit racing or jegs, maybe ebay for the parts, and a 12 pack of bear and a friend with a welder, unless you have a welder, and I would just get the element for your truck and maybe have someone bend you a freshair pipe to get rid of the stock snorkel. I am not sure if they make a chip for your rig or if they just reprogram your computer, I think that you need the other parts installed before the chip/ reprogram, that way you/they now what to calibrate the computer to. I might not be right but thats just my 2, wait I ain't got 2 cents, damn fuel prices.

I have a Ford F150 5.4 4X4 single cab. I changed all the oils to Amsoil, that got me 2 more. I did the exhaust and that got me 1 more. I'm getting ready to do a chip and change the shift patterns for less down shifting. That is supposed to get me 2 more. I have a friend that built a hydrogen maker on a Chevy truck. That got him 4 more. So I started out at 14 mpg. Spent $400.00 on the exhaust for 1mpg. Did the oil thing for $90.00 for 2 mpg. The chip cost $300.00 for 2 more. Total I will spend $790.00 for 5 mpg. When I do the Hydrogen maker I might get over 20 mpg on the open road. My problem is the pedal, when I hit the wood I get 10-12 mpg. I'm going to buy one of those Subaru Brats, they get 25 mpg and haul the dogs to boot.

Lord knows i dont have a solution to all that. but what i seem to enjoy watching out west is all the new young guys that drive these 30,000 dollar trucks and if they hunt even somewhat hard they are destroyed within 5 years then they are worth 5,000. thats a 25,000 dollar loss. i seem to have better luck with a 1/2 ton ford bought from some old man with 100,000 miles for 5,000. i can pull my 2 horse trailer (not the fastest) but it get me there. once iv destroyed the truck i sell it for 1,000 to the orchard workers. 4,000 dollar loss. all vehicles are losing investments i just try to loose the least. seems the young guys dont mind the loss.

Good Post. I was looking at some of this, Was Thinking about convernting my Desiel to Veggie..But I'm too scared about winter and afraid I'll shut down wrong.. So I gave up on that idea.

Catch,

I've been thinking about playing with and trying to build the Hydrogen Generator, But I Wasn't sure if it would make any difference..

Natural Gas sounds like a good idea also? What did you have to swtich out?
