Need some training help

Post by HuntingMachinist »

I live in West Michigan and have a 1 year old redbone. I have been working him on coon and he is coming along good. He is running and treeing. I want to run bobcat with him. I have some drag scent. Should I also work him on that or wait until he is better on the coon? I don't know if it will confuse him.
Thanks for the help/advise

Drags smell nothing like the real thing so run him on coon and put him on the real thing when comes to cats. Andy

Most hounds have to be taught what NOT to hunt. Bobcats are harder to trail than coons, so starting them too early on bobcats can be confusing for them if they haven't got a lot of drive, but its probably just fine. Barn cats are good intermediate practice.
Just remember, if you want to competition hunt them on coon, think twice about putting them on other game.

If he'll be smart enough to be any good at bobcats he'll be smart enough to run both of them when young without getting confused. Have at it.
