Black gold vs sportsmix

Post by Colby »

I m sure this topic gets beat up, but I can't find any threads on these to in comparison. Pros cons of each what do Yall like feeding? I ve feed sportsmix for about 4 years now with no problem but here lately seems like the food isn't as good as it was. Feeding more and couple dogs aren't looking as good as they did a month or two ago. Thinking about trying black gold. Thanks in advance for the posts

Black gold is kinda spendy , I feed diamond brand maintenance or high protein once a day my dogs seem do good on it was feeding IAMS but they seem to go down hill when Johnson & Johnson bought them out . I look at the % protein and the first 3 ingredients

Black Gold is a expensive dog food compared to what you can buy out there. I have fed it for several years and have fed most kinds of dog through the years. You get what you pay for. My dogs stay in great shape, I have less clean up and they eat less to stay looking good and working hard. With what ever you buy you usually get what you pay for. It is the best. Dewey

I feed sportsmix to like the blue bag. Been feeding black bag during summer found them craving it more since weather changing think it could be heat combined with fat % in black bag. I to used blue last winter liked it a lot, but wunder if I shouldn't turn that around to blue summer black winter ? Or just stay with blue year round.Protein a little less in black but fat higher. Dogs seem to be in great shape with little waste.

I've fed sport ix for the last 5 yrs. feed only black bag and sometimes a bag of green if the dealer is out of black. I feed my dogs which are running walker or run walker mix 12-14 oz per day. Sometimes in summer they will leave a little and I skip feeding that dog that day. They hold up good and strong all year and I run them every week of the year, summer and winter with the exception of 4 week during turkey season. You can hunt a dog 4 days a week if you get him feed and a few hrs rest in a 24 hr period. You can't get much hunting out of him if you leave him in the wood for several days without food. He will get his rest but doesn't have energy to hunt or keep his body weight up, he will go down hill fast in a week. Never fed black gold, it might do the same thing if you read the ingredients it is basically the same feed as are a dozen others. Keep them internal and external parasite free is a huge factor in dog health. It's not usually what you feed.

While Black Gold may cost a little more for a 50 lb. bag, it is cheaper to feed as you don't have to feed as much volume. I feed two cups per dog and they average 50-60 pounds. In the winter, I may have to feed a little more if I am really hunting hard.
I feed the Black bag year round but realize that my dogs might do a little better on the 24-20 blue bag in the winter months.

I feed a 38% protein 18% fat food during summer.
Supplemented with various Fatty oils bringing the fat % up to 21%.
During winter 39% protein 24% fat.
Dog doesn't do very well and loses weight fast on less.
Feed 3-3 1/2 cups/day for 44 pound dog.

I have fed black gold, 60 pound dog was eating just under 5 cups a day.
Switched to a better food in a hurry.
Dogs don't have any "off" days here.

Thank God we don't have to put up with your extreme temperatures down here. My dogs and I would not know how to handle it. The dogs do great on Black Gold in this heat.

I know a lot of guys that feed Black Gold and have good results. Sounds to me more like maybe a poor choice of wormer than poor choice of feed????????

I ve been using the same wormer sequence for a long time. Have had about 5 other friends feeding sportsmix having same issues. Dogs looking bad/bad stools. I worm my dogs with panacur once a month 1cc/5lbs and sometimes switch to safeguard just depending on if I can get panacur. I also typically once every 2 months give a small dose of Equimax.

Colby, go to the vet and get a quart bottle of Albion. I believe it is a sulphur based drug, I can remember the ingredients but it kills bacteria really well. Use as instructed by the bottle. I feed sport ix with good results. Sometime during the year ( mostly summer) my dogs look a little puny and ther stool will be loose. I use Albion as directed and it cures right up. about every three days clean your water bucket and add about 2 oz Clorox per 5 gal water, this is a good prevent. I'm in the south too, and we have a lot more bacteria because of heat. I've sold feed for 40yrsand have had numerous complaints about having bad feed. Independent lab test always came back negative on feed being the problem. Most evert time bad feed is the blame it kills the animal, not just makes it sick. Most pen kept dogs won't eat bad feed, they can tell the difference unless you have 2 dogs in a pen and they compete for food
