Re: Red Bones
Yeah, my dogs go everywhere I go all year. They mostly live inside and there is no off season. When it isn't cat season we're running coons. If I want to take a hike I just keep them heeled and all 5 stay pretty close. If I want them to go hunt I tell them and they're gone. I don't have much use for leashes except for tying dogs back when we shoot a lion out. As smart as they are they don't have enough brains to get out of the way when a lion falls. They try to catch it in the air if they aren't tied back. They are family to me. I treat them as good as I can and they do their best to please me.

I haven't been to Oregon for a few years. I have family over near Eugene. I should get over there and visit. If I do I'll look you up.

Re: Red Bones
Kevin or Dewey or anyone; did you guys see the video of a foxhound master walking through a crowd of well dressed socialites surrounded by a large pack of foxhounds who sifted their way through all the people with not the slightest distraction as they stayed with him. ?
They showed a hunt also and none of the dogs young or old wore electronics of any kind.
Do you guys think he trained each of those many dogs individually to heal, or does he have some kind of pack magic, or what do you think?
He gave a speach and never even a word or even a glance toward the dogs that I can remember. It would have been as un-needed as looking at his own clothes and telling them to stay on his body.
I have always wanted to know his methods since seeing that. There was no sign of electronics anywhere in the video.

Re: Red Bones
Ok, here is a more specific question. I know how to make dogs stay close to me. (I sure wouldn't try it in a patio party though). And I can teach them a release. But on the release, they are still thinking about me. In other words, there are times when I want a dog to go deep and go hard. But I have never had a dog that would, because my dogs are taught to be very mindful of my presence. So they can never get very far from me without thinking they need to check back in. Now that I am older and want my dogs to do more of the work, I am wondering if you can have both.
Kevin, how far are your dogs hunting out from you when you release them. And how did you get them to that point of understanding?
The dogs I have known that would go a mile to find a track were not mine and did not handle to my satisfaction. And honestly, I have seen this in the competition coon hound world, but not in the bobcat hunting world. But I could use it to help me find the one bobcat that is hidden somewhere in this state I live in. He is not crossing a road, wherever he is.

Re: Red Bones
You can make a deep hunting dog range closer but I've never seen anyone put drive into a dog that doesn't have it. Like I said somewhere above, I don't make dogs I just take them hunting and let nature take it's course. I breed for the traits I want in a dog. Drive is one of those traits. I have no use for lazy dogs that won't get out from under my feet.

Re: Red Bones
Well spoken Kevin. So can you give me an idea about how far your dogs are ranging from you and how often they check in? Will they range a mile, without scent pulling them along, in order to find a track?
Do your redbones have Timber Chopper blood?
Thank you.

Re: Red Bones
When I'm coon hunting they go till they get treed. A lot of times they are close to a mile or deeper before they get struck. I don't want a dog checking in. I turn them loose to tree game, not to find me. I know where I am, don't need a dog to come find me. I suppose at some point they would come back if there was no game but it's my job to put them in game. I cat hunt in the snow so when I turn them loose it's on a track and they go until they are treed or can't trail it any farther and when I get there to help they are expected to be there working to figure it out. I have no use for dogs that check in. Just about every redbone out there has Timber Chopper in there blood if you look back far enough. He was a pretty popular dog way back in the day and bred to a lot of females. He's so far back in most dogs that it would be foolish to call them Timber Chopper bred. The guy that owned him got back into dogs and has Timber Chopper Kennels. My dogs don't have any of that in them, just the old Timber Chopper dog.

Thank you.
There is a breeder in Minnesota that bred super tight on Timber Chopper and said it was as pure as anyone had. It has been over ten years since I talked to him though.

Re: Red Bones
David I have seen the video with the fox hounds. The dogs are looking to the master of hounds for direction. I feel it is breeding the right mind set and a lot of working with the dogs both hunting and handling. You remember Millie she was never tied or kenneled around here and I walk hunted out of the house with her a lot. She would not go hunting without me sending her out. One day another person was here and asked me if she would hunt or just a yard dog. I said watch this, called her name and said Millie lets go hunting, she was gone and in a little while we heard her open on a bobcat in the distance. I spent half the night up on the hill with her that night with on a bobcat race. I have two or three dogs here most of the time that are laying around the place, if I collar them and say lets go hunting they are gone but they have never left the place on their own. That said one needs to know that one year I treed 28 bobcats walking the dogs out of my place for exercise but have never had the dogs leave on their own. I have turned 10 to 15 dogs out of their kennels to run and play of all ages and seldom if ever have one go off the place [20 acres]more than a 100 yards. How do you teach that by just doing and have a dog focus on you for direction. It just takes time and trust. With the right mind set in a dog you can teach it what ever you want if you take the time. As far as sending dogs out hunting I don't most of the time I want a dog to hunt with me staying within 200 to 400 yards waiting at intersections of roads to see which way to go. I have hunted with fox hounds that are sent out to find a track and coon dogs sent up creeks looking for coons but have never desired a dog to go out and hunt far for me unless they wind a track. Each to their own. Dewey

Re: Red Bones
Mine know the difference in hunting and just being loose. When it's time to go hunting they go. When they're just loose around the yard they better stay fairly close. The biggest secret to this hound game is brains on both ends of the leash.
