Rattlesnake vaccine

Post by NoDak »

Hello, I am new here so I have been reading up on all of the post. I have forgotten which post I read where a dog was bittten by a Rattlesnake.

This may be old information. But, did you know there is a dog vaccine for the Western Diamond Back venom. If you want more info the company is Redrock Biologics. www.redrockbiologics.com.

Probably not something for every hound. Unless they are a really good dog, or a blood line that you want to protect.

I am not affilated with Red Rock Biologicals in any way. I just thought this was interesting given the areas some hunt and the range of the Western Diamond Back.

My vet and a few other folks told me about a new rattlesnake vaccine said $75. But thought that was too much. I have had only two dogs bitten in 25+ years so its not realy a big deal for me. Both dogs just swelled up a bit and was fine a few days later. I didn't take them in to the vet. We don't get diamond backs up here just Blacktails and three types of pigmy rattlers. They are alot less aggressive and I train my dogs to leave all snakes alone.

I would say a hound thats chassing big game has alot more risk of getting killed by a bear or lion than a rattlesnake. Still might be a good idea if you had a real valueable lion dog... But the risks are fairly small. And I think the best way to minamise the risk is to train your dogs to stay away from all snakes. Its fairly easy to get them to leave snakes alone because most dogs alredy have an instintive fear of snakes. Some dogs react to fear differntly tho and will attack instead so just need to let those dogs know its not a good idea

so I checked with my vet today about getting the rattler vaccine. It is a two shot system in which each shot is 28 dollars. Not bad and worth it I think.

25.00 a shot w/2 needed I think well worth it especially in rattler country, just when you feel it could never happen to you could have should have would have.

thats what I am saying the vet said before there was only one company making the vaccine so they could charge what ever they wanted and they were charging around 500 for a vaccine. Don't you love competition.

Here in South Texas we have alot of Rattle Snakes. Had 3 pups an a gyp bit in the past two months. The one gyp and one pup were just bit two nights ago. We keep Penicillin and Dexamethasone around the house all the time. 2cc pen. and 6cc dex. and do that for a couple days depending on their condition. Nothing to worry about. As for the drugs, you can get them from your vet.
