Coles National Cat Hounds

Post by al baldwin »

There is a registered breed of hounds for cat hunting according to Dale Cole, these hounds have been bred by his dad since 1930. Dale Cole states he is sixty three and was born into this line of dogs and has devoted his life to preserving this line of dogs. Anyone interested in his face book page that has numerous pictures of these dogs & cats his dad & he has caught over time, as well as a brief history can see at Coles National Cathounds. I have no experience with this line of dogs, no reason to doubt his words, however remember anything can be printed. Therefore, I caution all young hunters to check him out before laying down your hard earned cash & remember you are not buying the parents, when purchasing a pup, always a gamble. Al

I have talked with him a few times about his dogs. Seem's like a nice enough man. I was curious on his crosses. Seem's like he has a good idea on what he wants and expects from his dogs and seem's to get it out of his crosses. I don't think I would hesitate to try one his crosses. Just for the heck of it

Dale and his Dad Sonny before him sure enough know bobcat dogs and have caught a ton of them. His dogs will hit the green briars and put it on a cat and they can handle a rough track or he won't keep them or breed them.

I got a young redtick female from him about 18 years ago.She was a absolute complete total cull. She would not run anything period . Some guys i knew in Canada got a male from him that they really liked.I do believe he breeds some good dogs but like any other breeder that doesn't mean you'll get a good one if you buy one.

How do you breed your dogs? Just interested are you line breeding or continually breeding out to unrelated stock?

Closest thing I've seen is when I lived in Redding, Ca. I friend of mine bought a young English looking hound from Cole and at about a year old was starting to come on to bears. I only hunted with him a couple times. Saw him strike a track that someone else's pack had just run through the area. Never saw him on any cats.

I knew some cathunters in northern Oklahoma in the late 90's who got their start with these dogs & caught cats. Most eventually bred in different blood to establish their own line of dogs & lost what they had which is typical of new hounsmen , focusing on trying to improve the hounds and not themselves. One guy bred really tight for really to long and they started getting inbred depression. I never owned any personally, but would, if you do your job Dales dogs will to.
