how do u know if ur running a bear
So had a situation yesterday driving down the rd my b and t struck she never strikes trash. Dumped um and they freaking ran and ran it was a pretty straight line on the GPS no circles nothing they crossed the rd a couple times gravel was to hard to see a track. They ended up freeing at the bottom of a super steep canyon took me 4 ours to get half way down one side and it started getting dark so I turned around. They stayed on that tree till this morning and they eventually left it. So what I'm asking is. Is there a way to tell weather it was a bear by looking at the gps. The dogs never shut up and didn't seem to lose the track. The only other thing they have ran is a moose. Any one bayed up a moose? Wish I coulda made it to that tree but there was no possible way. Got all the dogs back dead tired and slipped pads thanks for any replies

Re: how do u know if ur running a bear
Could be a moose. I had a black and tan that every year would run a moose. A lot of the time the moose would trot out in a straight line. Only once did I have one bayed up. A big bull standing with his head down backed into a group of trees. He only ran 100 yards before he stopped to fight.
I would think it was a bear, even a moose would leave some marks on hard packed gravel.

Makes me wonder the night before they treed a bear but my b and t has only struck 2 times outta the box once on a coon second time on what ever that was. I would think if they bayed up a moose it woulda been constant barking but they sounded treed my b and t is super choppy but my walker will hit it had and then back of then bark hard. Idk probley was sasquatch

Re: how do u know if ur running a bear
When I stared guiding bear hunters [ over 45 years ago] the outfitter that I worked for would make me take a dog on leash to the track and follow with the dog on leash until I found a track, making sure it was a big bear and going the right way before turning loose. It was a great learning experience. No trash and no back tracking. I even treed a couple of bear with my strike dog on leash. This was western Oregon in the coast range. Good hunting Dewey

Re: how do u know if ur running a bear
Unfortunately I have bayed up numerous moose. For me the hardest thing to break young dogs off of is moose. Moose typically don't straight line and run roads frequently. A running moose will leave plenty of evidence crossing even a hard packed gravel road. Hard running bears run up or down a drainage or stick to the same elevation for a long way if crossing country and do not run roads more than several hundred yards at most. Straight line races that don't run like a typical bear and cover major country I get very suspicious of being a wolf race.
Our soil in western Montana is very hard to read tracks in. I have hunted in other states where the soil is so soft you could see tracks almost as easy as if were snow. In my country you could lead dogs on a track on bare ground for 2 miles and never find a track.

Yeah this thing never ran a road crossed went pretty straight then up a drainage and treed in a drainage on the other side of the mountian I'm thinking it was a bear the night before they had a bear.and what ever they were chasing they treed or bayed up. And this thing ran a straight line just below the top before it crossed over.

Re: how do u know if ur running a bear
Some bears never stop running. Once you top 15 miles the odds of catching it go down considerably unless you can repack dogs. I have treed some that ran between 15 and 20 miles. Treed one that ran between 20 and 25 miles that one my dogs all quit except one and refused to go on repacks. Terrain makes a big difference on how many miles dogs will push a bear. I have had my dogs rested up in top shape and all quit before 15 miles and hardly get out of the dog boxes for 2 days in steep brushy country. I am pretty stubborn on catching stuff and love a hard running bear I never pull off a hard runner and will run it till the dogs literally quit it. I want my dogs to know that I expect them to catch whatever I put them on but I will also never leave my dogs no matter how rough or late my dogs always know I will get to them if they tree or bayup.
