swolen right jaw?

Last night I went to feed the dogs and my 8 year old walker dog has a swoolen jaw and cheeck. She din't seemed bothered by it though. I suspected bee sting and gave her 2 benadryl. I check her at 5 a.m. this moring and she is still swollen and gave her 2 more. I live in michigan(no poison snakes) and the only other thing I can think of is that it could be a spider bite or a swollen gland somewhere. Her eye is fine so it's not a bad tear duct. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas if she is still swollen when I get home from work what to do.

The wife just got home and check on her, the dog is still swollen but it pop and is draining she clean her up but can't see anything wrong with the dog (bad tooth or anything else) I told her to give her some ampricilen and aspiren and I be home at 4p.m. She must had an infection of some sorts but I could not see anything wrong last night.

Update 5-16-08 8 a.m. swelling is down and still draining she must have polk her self in the cheeck so how but she doing fine. I still giving her some antibiotics for the next few day's thanks for the help.

Check for an abcessed tooth or it may be an infected slivia duct - she would be slobering a bunch!

I had a male dog once that was bad to jump trees and one night i took him with an old bluetick a buddy had. They treed and my dog runs the tree and falls on the other dog. My buddys dog was alot older than mine which was only a year or two old and he grabbed mine by the side of the jaw and tried to shake him. The next day his jaw was majorly swollen. I took him to the vet the next day because the swelling was not getting any better. Vet said it was bruised saliva gland. The prescribed steroids and anti inflamatories had most of the swelling gone the next day.

Also there were no skin punctures or obviouse signs of a dog fight on him.

Also cured my dog of running trees. He sits barks and chews now.

I had a young dog that hit a rock so hard while chasing a pack rat and his whole muzzle swelled up for 3 days. He was so reckless that I didn't think he would make it past 1 year old...

Anyhow there could be any number of causes to a swolen jaw so if it was my dog I would cheak it out thoughly for any bites ect. Then watch for 2-3 days and if it don't start going down on its own its vet time... I rarly take mine to vets unless I can't fix it myself or its going to heal up on its own in a few days or I would be poor.

Just hope ya got a decent vet and resonalbly priced in your area. We have a good vet here but he is getting on in years and just hired two young guys that are... shall we say lacking? They do ok work but I can't stand a grown man that starts talking baby talk to a dog... niether can one of my dogs, tends to jump up into thier face with a loud bark and licks thier face then shuts his mouth with a snap, that gets thier attension! Then I tell them its better to talk in a normal tone of voice around my dogs.

isn't asprin dangerous for k9s

MY VET HAS TOLD ME NOT TO EVER GIVE ASPRIN TO MY HOUNDS IT IS VERY DANGEROUS FOR THEM. WHAT HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD ABOUT THIS?

I had a big akita/rot that would get all stoved up, vet told me to give him asprin(small doseage) and it made it so he could walk around and he wouldn't wine in pain at night.

I don't know if it is good or bad for them, but I would do it again.

The vet and the book I have say asprin is ok to give dogs. Tylynol is not it screws up there liver like it does in humans.

i stand corrected my wife just told me the vet said tylonol not asprin so i guess it is tylonol. sorry!!!!

if the vet ruled out absothed toot and no inside the mouth puncture wound like from crunchung down on a chicken bone or pork bone , then it could be a spider or a bore beatle bite ? All ya ned too do its buy some penstrip shots and surrenges at the feed store. A) use the surrenge too go into the swollen cavidy and suck out all the poisen welled up in his face and then give him a shot right in the wound full of pennstrip and repete once a day for 4 days and stop for several day regardless if its all worked out or not. Ya can kill the dog if ya do it more than 4 streight dasbut 4 streight usually works and if not letting it rest 2 day and going back 4 more streight days should finisn it out.
But untill the vet rules out lymph glands and impacked tooth decay/ I would do anythin other than too drain it and use hydrigian proxide in it too too flush out !
