Here in Minnesota everywhere I can find a cat track I can find more wolf tracks. I run with my dogs and am usually within 100 yards of them. I only run two dogs and they work together well.

It seems like they are different in different places. I feel bad for people that have lost dogs to wolves. But when I hunted Minnesota I dealt with it the same as red barn trail hounds does. For me there was no second guessing or asking myself questions, but if I did, the logical question would be: "am I willing to put my dogs in situations where they might be hurt?" And the only answer is "obviously, yes. I put them in potential danger any time I turn them loose or load them in the dog box and drive them through town." My only other option would have been to not hunt. I was with Wolves every time I bobcat hunted that region. I got nervous at times. Maybe even skeert a time or two. But the wolves were not nearly the threat that beaver were with their under-ice runs caving under me; or a whole list of other dangers and close calls that easily could have taken my life or the life of a dog. honestly, porcupines have dealt more damage and death than wolves in my own personal experience. And if you want to count danger from automobiles, wolves are nothing at all. Stay with your dogs as best you can, say a prayer for safety, and go hunting.

I can't say wolves would avoid a conflict with your dogs.

I believe they have avoided conflict with me. And that is about all I can say with any certainty.

There were just a ton of unknowns for me. All I really knew for sure was that wolves were not going to keep me from going bobcat hunting. There were enough other things doing that already.

They have been very close to me; close enough for me to hear the movement, while talking to me or to each other (I am not sure which). I rarely carried a gun, but there were a few times I was wishing I had.

I am guessing if I had lost a couple good dogs to them, I might be giving you a very different attitude. But I have learned I can't live my life based on other peoples fears. I try to let God and nature teach me what to be afraid of. And in my own personal life, I have not one reason to fear wolves, or let them shut down my hunting in any way.

I can't tell you what to do in your situation. But in whatever you do, I pray the Lord would bless you and keep you, shine His face on you, and give you peace.

I have lost several dogs to wolves and it sucks bad. In cat season I always pay attention to where the wolves are and which direction they are heading. If i think the wolves are even close i keep my dogs in the box. One thing i have started doing and i think it works really well..before i turn loose on a track i let my dogs raise absolute hell in the box, the louder the better. After about 15 minutes of barking i fire 2 or 3 shots in the air with my rifle. If there are any wolves within hearing range they associate barking with gun shots. I got this idea one morning in camp, I was getting ready to load up the dogs and when they started barking i could hear wolves way off in the distance lite up. They started coming closer and closer, they started over a mile away and came up the road on a run until they were within 200 yards of camp. I fired 2 shots and they hi-tailed it and i never heard them again. Had it been daylight i could have killed several.

I ALWAYS fire shots before i turn loose, rifle shells are cheap insurance! If everybody would do this then eventually wolves would associate hounds with guns. Obviously nothing is full proof, we just have to use good judgement and do everything possible to protect our dogs.

My biggest unknown fear would be beaver and bobcat kill sets. Like david said about the ice too. I try to avoid walking on the hollow ice but the dogs are following the cat. I have been pretty nervous walking out on some of the dammed up flowages. I try to hunt where people are not trapping, but there is only so much good habitat in public places.

Most of my hunting is done in wolf country. I have had one dog killed by wolves. Other than that I have had several times wolves close to my dogs without issues. During snow hunting I do not turn out where I know wolves are I have passed up numerous tracks because of wolves in the area. On bare ground it's a gamble. In most of the areas I hunt I think wolves avoid hounds as they associate them with people. I also load as many dogs on a track as I think a track can handle I believe a lot of track volume deters wolves. Most dogs killed are single dogs at a time when they are strung out on a track. Wolves are mainly nocturnal and usually lay up during the day. I believe some incidents happen when dogs trail through one of these layup areas. There are exceptions to the above wolves have killed entire packs and they have come into trees and killed dogs at the tree. There are people that would never hunt in wolf country because of the risks but the risks are not near as high as most people think it is. I figure more hounds in Montana are killed by lions than wolves. If my hounds approach a busy highway my stress level is 10x higher than any wolf encounter I ever had.

Last winter I had a friend with a lion tag and we had a nice overnight tom track going into a several square mile section. There was also a pack of wolves in the area. I spent a couple hours trying to sort everything out and I could not come up with the confidence that wolves weren't in the same area as the lion was headed. I refused to turn loose my friend was pretty disappointed. Like I said I don't think the danger as near as high as some think it is however I will not put my hounds at unnecessary risk.
