Thoughts on pricing
Thoughts on pricing
Curious what your thoughts are on what a good hound is worth? I've seen some of the prices on cat dogs on here and decided to sell my best cat dog being he's not gritty enough for bear and I have some good looking young dogs coming up, I listed him here a while back for 3500$ and had a ton of interest but not being hunting season to show him he didn't sell, or maybe too high? Now I relished him during season and have had very little interest, does that sound too high for a good cat dog?

Re: Thoughts on pricing
That's not to high for a dog that can tree cat alone but not many people are going to buy a hound without seeing it catch a cat .
A great cat dog will sell for $ 5000 and i've heard of some going for more .
You have to remember that there are lots of crooks out there that will put a high price on a dog that couldn't catch a cold .
If you want to sell the dog it also helps to take pictures of the dog in action .

This dog will jump and run with the best of them but we don't catch a very high percentage here in MN they will run all day and not tree but if they are catchable he will catch them, he is also a good coon dog, maybe that would make him worth less? It's not a problem here cause we always put him on a track, had him in AZ last two winters on the dry ground where we just walked draws and only ran cats, most guys were asking if he ran lion, he's only been on a couple but I would think if is a good cat dog he would also be a good lion dog?

I don't know about pricing on dogs in your neck out the country, but I will say if no one is willing to pay the price you ask you have 2 options, A. Hunt him yourself, or B. Lower the price where someone will purchase and make space for those up and comers.
Not being disrespectful in any way but remember in this scenario your are selling one of your culls. This dog doesn't have the grit to do what you ask of it, and obviously isn't a straight cat dog, which is what I see bringing the big bucks, I say that bc you have bear hunted the dog as well.
He really may be fantastic. I'm not doubting that, but great dogs are rarely sold from my experiences, so if you need him gone lower the price.

I've noticed that straight cat dogs seem higher also but wher cat season is only 2 months it's nice to be able to run them on something else too, he is by no means a cull on cats but I see your point, I like to keep as few dogs as possible around so they need to perform on bear also

Most high dollar cat dogs are sold by a hunters reputation. Your dog owned by someone better known in the cat hunting world may bring over $5,000.00, otherwise the only way most people will pay big bucks is seeing the dog in action. Are you offering a trial on the dog? Trialing a dog can be can have pitfalls too, I once sold a dog for $800.00 on a month trial with no money down, took almost a year for me to get paid. After having several dog selling ordeals myself I have vowed never to sell another dog, I am not cut out for all the BS involved in selling dogs, my dogs need to be good on everything or else they are free or get shot.
Re: Thoughts on pricing
These guys gave you some great input. I know a person doesn't want to hear some of what was said but there being honest with you. To me your wanting the price of a dog that's finishing most of its jumps. The guys on the west coast are a little more picky and a little more stingy because of the longer seasons and the straight dog factor. Most hard hunters two year olds probably have been on more tracks then dogs out your way that are twice there age. Hope whatever you do works out for the best. If you need the dog gone lower your price and be honest with the person. Happy Holidays
Re: Thoughts on pricing
I know what you you mean about being on more tracks a buddy of mine moved to Colorado has treed a couple hundred cats with his dog she probably thinks like a cat by now but my dog has treed over two hundred coon obviously not the same as cats but lots of trailing, I haven't hunted with anyone other than our crew so I don't have much to judge against but this is the best dog we have, he jumped almost every track we ran last year and is fast on track, I would be curios to see how he compares to other people's good dogs, I would like to see someone who hunts a lot and has good dogs try him, I'm pretty sure he would hold his own, I think I'll drop the price a little and offer a trial, Thanks for the advise!

Re: Thoughts on pricing
If you let him out on trial only accept a cashier check for payment and guarantee the person you will not cash the check before a mutually agreed upon date. You might write a note explaining conditions of trial and both of you sign it.
Something to think about that gives you both some protection.

Really good dogs sell themselves. That being said there are not very many of them.
