Running dogs locating
Re: Running dogs locating
Do you really think that the brush holds the dogs back all that much? I have had bird dogs that ran threw the brush just as fast as they did out in the sage flats. We have Black berry thickets so thick you can't crawl thew. The dogs seem to get in there and cruise just fine when chasing game. Dogs are low profile they get threw it obviously better then we do. If the dog does have a tough time getting threw it then so does the varmint. Brush and blow downs is just an excuse we been using for our dogs since we could talk. Some dogs do fine in blow downs some don't. If your hunting blow down find dogs that work in blow down. If your hunting Cliffs find dogs that cast around Cliffs....... Mark, Does your dog's catch game any faster when your hunting the thick coast to when they are hunting the cascades?
Re: Running dogs locating
I guarantee, your bird dog couldn't run as fast in a briar thicket so thick you gotta crawl through as you put it, as fast as he could in the open sage field.... listen to your statement.... Laughable!
We may use thick, blowdowns, wind, humidity, temp, time of day, color of leaves, if a dog Farted so the others smelled the fart not the track etc as an excuse.
A Chihuahua and a st Bernard may both be able to use the same doggy door, but I bet one will fit through it a lot easier than the other.
Ever notice how in some thick dogs end up single file instead of packed up 2-3 wide fighting for lead? There's a reason.

Re: Running dogs locating
Wasn't ment to be taken so literally. The dogs cruise threw it fast enough whether they are single file or three wide. If a person is hunting super thick brush why would they have a dog the size of a saint Bernard? I would choose the chihuahua. If I was hunting Montana or a more open state then maybe the Saint Bernard. Do you ever get away from your running grounds and hunt the National forest? And do you see the difference in the way the cats run or the amount of time it takes to catch them?

Re: Running dogs locating
I've always found that cats in the Cascade Mountains were easier to tree than those on the coast.

How fast can a dog run a track across this? Seems pretty wide open. Prolly can fly.

Re: Running dogs locating
What Robin said, and when you run right on the edge of the valley floor in the heavy sticker briar patches they get a little tougher yet. But dont take any of this as gospel cuz i dont catch enough to make a fair assessment on how good a cat can or cant run.
Re: Running dogs locating
If you could say a bobcat votes with his feet, nearly every cat I have known votes for running in heavy brush, or other obstacles, over open country, when pressed, if they have the option. Those who have chosen open country have realized it was not a good option, unless it becomes the "scent free" option. I am guessing that bobcats feel dogs are usually hindered (slowed down) by brush and obstacles; all other factors being equal.
Just guessing.
Just guessing.

Your Probably right David. And Mark don't give us that crap we know you got good dogs and know what's going on. Haha..... Why is Cat hunting on the East Coast a running dog game? Just curious always wondered. So would the Out West hounds or Running Cross dogs Locate any better on the East coast where the timber isn't as big. Or would them dogs be about the same in production?
