Re: Bobcat attack
A note of caution: anytime you see a usually shy and reclusive animal acting tame or nonchalant in the presence of humans beware!
Some years ago a ranch family I knew had seen a big bobcat during the afternoon and it acted pretty tame just sort of walked across the road pretty near the house as they were leaving for an evening church service. Upon arriving home after church later that evening now dark they pulled up and a 12 year old girl jumped out to run into the house. As she opened the yard gate this bobcat jumped on her from under the hedge and took her right to the ground. Hearing her screams the Dad jumped out and ran up and kicked at the cat knocking it lose. It jumped up and got him by the leg and around and around they went till he grabbed a nearby shovel and beat it to death. The girl's face and arms were really scratched up and she had some bite marks as well. The Dad was clawed and chewed. Upon getting to the hospital they immediately were tested and the Game Dept. had been notified and they picked up the cat and got it tested as well. Rabies confirmed they both had to go thru the painful treatment process as well as some plastic surgery for the girl. The dad later said I just knew something was not right with that cat when I saw him earlier but by then it was too late.
My oldest son called me one time and said he had pulled up to a locked gate and their was a big tom bobcat setting right there but the gate and he acted sort of groggy but was not afraid in the least. I recalled the rancher's story and told him to dispose of it if he had a gun and called Game and Fish. Working he did not have a gun but not wanting anybody else to come to the gate and encounter the cat he backed off got a long cheater pipe out of the truck and slipped around the truck and brained him killing him right off. Again test proved a rabid cat.
So again beware wild animals that seem strangely tame!!!
