Not a bobcat but an ocelot

This is the release of an ocelot in a ranch we have near Soto La Marina.

One of the workers at the ranch has cock fowls (fighting rooster) I don´t know if cock fowls is the translation for "gallos de pelea" and about twice a year he will get a visit from ocelots trying to kill the hens and chickens. In this case he trap the ocelot and then we release it in another part of the ranch to stop the damage.

It´s a video, but I was able only to upload a picture.

Next time he traps an ocelot it will be release to my hounds and hopely be left at the tree. Scaring him not to visit the hens and chickens anymore.

Wow that is cool, I wonder how similar they would run to a bobcat? What kind of hounds are you running down there?

The translation for gallos de pelea would be fighting cocks or game cocks.

I've heard they can put up quite the race. I think it was in that book "the American lion hunter" where I had read about a story dealing with an ocelots. These hound hunter were down south on a jaguar hunt and there hounds cut an ocelot track. By the way it was described it sounded as though it was a fun chase. Some of the guys spoke of how it was more exciting then the jaguars they were there to hunt. If I'm thinking of the right book.

Anyhow, what kind of hounds do you run? I would love to hear about them. Where about do you run them? Good luck with the ocelot treeing.

I have treed a few Ocelot and they don't run any different than bobcats.

I have some experience not much running bobcats and ocelots. What I have experience a bobcat is more difficult to tree. In dry ground near south texas or where I have the ranch, to catch them regularly you need a pack of hounds. You will not have much luck with only one hound. They will have to work in a team and be very fast to put some pressure so he will tree.

The few races I have had with ocelots its about five races. They will not run that much, maybe at the most one mile and with only one good dog you will tree them. The don´t have long legs as the bobcats and they will not last very much at high speed.

I have registed blueticks from Guy Ormiston, Buzz Anderson and Jim Bartley breeding. But until this year I use them mostly on coon. This year I am going more often to a family ranch that I am in charge that has ocelots, bobcats, lions and jaguar. Maybe in five years from now will have much more experience with the cat family running with hounds.

I will use fighting cocks, for safety reasons. In Mexico like in the USA they are trying to prohibited those activities (fighting cocks)
