What to do with it after i catch it?

So i found some coyotes the other week, and when i come home this wednesday, i want to turn the hound loose and see if he can run game well, if not then he'll be a treer. Anyway I got to thinking bout yote and wondered a few things.

Do they taste good? can i pan fry em, or just throw the meat into a stew?

Where can i sell the skin/hide? Where do i find prices for Western Coyote?

are you smoking crack!!! Selling is one thing, but the pelts aren't prime this time of year, the other, seek professional help!!!!!!!!

Humm don't knock it til you try it, people eat dogs in lots of countries (guessing a coyote would be simular... you would likly want to cook it well cause they eat all kinds of nasty crap). Personaly I an't that hard up yet!!

Pelts are generaly worth alot more in the colder months. But if theres nothing else to run sure an't no harm in killing a few coyotes... don't worry they will make more :wink:

Lol, naw i aint smoking crack, i just tend to eat what i kill, kinda a rule i got, and believe me ive regretted it before(There aint much meat on a robin).
Well where could i find info on preparing the hide.

case the hide ( skin it just like you would take a sock off) don't split it down the middle. Put it on a strectch board and let it dry. NO salting. If it is still warm, you can get the tail bone out by gripping it with a couple screw drivers on each side and pulling away right up the tail, otherwise you have to cut it out. Some buyers around here were buying them unskinned and its well worth the $10 they knock off.

how do I go about finding a buyer and viewing fur prices?
Alright so I think i need to find someone in my area that can show me how to do this properly, Ive skinned a few animals before, but I never really paid attention to saving the fur, most of the time cause the hide froze solid in a few hours after being stripped off.
Any good places to buy the equipment needed to do it properly?

To case skin you start at the back legs slit down the rear to the anus hang by the tendons. Cut around the anus then I usualy cut the tail off if its been sitting a while and skin the tail later. Other wise I slit the tail and pull it off using the knife to make sure hide don't get stuck to the tail bones can pull the tail off the hide if ya are not carful (there is a tail striper tool that makes this super easy) . Then peel the hide off the legs and cut up near the toes now just pull down towards the head. Til you get to the front legs pull them out and cut hide off near the foot. Now you have the front leg holes as a handle and can pull the rest of the way to the ears. Cut the ears off close to the skull and keep pulling down to the nose. Get all the skin off and cut again at the nose.

Now take the hide and put on a board, Scrape the fat ect off it be sure not to put any holes in it, if you do just sew em up. Dental floss works good for that. Then put it on a stretcher and let dry flesh side out. Once dry, but not too dry turn it back right side out and put back on stretcher for a bit. Take it off stretcher and your done and redy to sell now. You should also brush out any tangles ect and clean up any blood just to make it look better, get abit more that way.

I don't know about eating coyotes... but I have eaten lion and its pretty good. Heard some old time trappers ate just about anything they caught including skunk. I ain't never been that hard up!! If you do tell us how it tastes :wink:

Alright i'll try it, but i dont know, im a visual learner on most things, so the hide might just come out like a deer hide would, lol. I assume i'll get frustrated and some point and just whip out the gut hook and "zip zip" the whole thing, lol.

So what do ya'll do with the animals once ya get done skinning em, since ya dont eat em? Id attempt to use the herbivoires as bait, but i really only have one trap, and im by far the most unlikly person to trap, since id probably never find the darn thing after i set it. Oh and technically its Illegal in oregon to use "game" animal as bait.

Ima gonna try and talk to a local taxidermist and see if he can "show" me anything, and also give me tips on the tools. I wish my uncle lived out here, cause he'd a "mountain man" and love this kinda thing.

Don't be eating coyotes. Tricinosis (spelling?) is real bad in them. They are scavangers, they eat anything and everything, and they like it better when its rotten and full of maggots. Don't waste your time or the animal this time of year. The pelts are useless until late fall. After you skin your first coyote, I believe you will change your mind about eating one. LMAO. But heck, some of us are sicker than others.

As far as eating what you kill, good thoughts but who ever said the trigger needs to be a gun. Get a camera instead of eating nasty coyotes. Hell I will send you some steaks before I would let you eat a yote.lol

Also, coyotes are pack animals, animals which protect the packs young. I believe you have young hounds. Get that hound on a young coyote and you may be in for more than you bargained for, vet bills or worse a dead dog. The young pups are very protected by the pack this time of year.

Patience is the key to success, you cant rush things in life, the faster you go the worse you will do in the end when your just starting out. Let the pups be pups, and maybe do some drags. Wait until the season comes and run with the big dogs. Good finished dogs will teach the pup many more lessons in hunting than you ever will.

well theres alot of tricinosis in wild boar, domestic pig, and bear. Ya just have to cook it real good to kill the parasite bout 160*. But i dont really plan on eating yote, just getting their pelts, i just have to figure out how to case them, I know theres an explanation above, but im still lost, lol.
But Steel bout them steaks?!

Oh and this 8mo pup is currently 90lbs and not one skunk found yet. The only things that drive this pup is Cats, Yotes, and small dogs that look like cats, lol.
