B@T's on bobcats?

Post by bullriver »

I am wondering how you guy's black dogs do on bobs. I live in nw Montana and I hear alot about walkers and how they dominate everything else on bobcat. I don't hear much about B@Ts, is that because there are more walkers or what? Also what are the top bloodlines of black dogs for bobs and lion?

Some Black and Tans will make good cat dogs just like any other breed. The main thing is to get dogs that are bred for cat dogs and not the nite hunt breeding. Good cat dogs in any breed are few and far between. Even breeding two great cat dogs doesnt always mean success. You might have run into more good walker catdogs because there are alot more walkers in your area. But I can assure you that the percentage is about the same for any breed in the cat dog area. Maybe 10 percent or so of any line will turn out a cat dog. Out of that 10 percent maybe one percent will turn out to be a good cat dog.

Just a lot more walkers around. We've run B & T's on bobcats and they catch em as good as any other breed, IMO. We probably only tree a half dozen a year as we are mainly lion hunting. We run Nightrider, McDonald and Duncan.
Once you go black, you'll never go back! Duncan big game Black and Tans.

There are several guys within the state that run bobs with B&T's. The walkers are the dominent hound simply because there are more of them in pure numbers. Every breed has excellent hounds you just have to find the one's that will work in your area for what you want.

Keep your eyes open for hounds in minnesota, michigan, new hamspire, vermont, maine and oregon. These areas are realitively close to our climate and conditions with exception to oregon. The B&T's we run on bobcats are Duncan bred 3 generations back with some McDonald blood also.

bullriver, I have a Duncan pup that is a year old, I really like him he is cat crazy. He is doing a good job. We have caught 9 lion this year and he has been on most of them. He is hunting hard and treeing hard. I did not try him on bobcats this year but I will next year.

I'm by noway the authority on black dogs but old wayne hutching has and will continue to fill his limit on bobs in utah every year. he only has black dogs and thats all he ever has had. yet i tend to believe that a guy that has a lot of cat savey himself will be a bonus to making a good b&t bobcat dog. he has alot of his dads lines from years ago and can sure make a dog fast. that guy would rather run a bob than a lion any day. good luck with makin bobcat dogs them little demons have more tricks in them than the wife on payday!!!!
