What is up with this?

Post by Hunter »

My buddy and I caught a hog the other night and his female got tagged pretty good but nothing that would require a visit to the vet. We sewed up a place about the size of a half dollar and put her his basement where it was cool for acouple days. The problem is that it apears to me to be infected because the spot swells up and once you stick it with a needle it drains puss and alittle bit of blood for a pretty good while. Should we remove the stitches and just let her lick it and keep it draining or keep draining it ourselves every day? She is eating good and running like she isn't in any pain. Thanks.

sounds like you didn't clean it with anything before stitching, or the stitching wasn't very sanitary

It got a dose of house hold peroxide and then we poured Idoine (sp) on it. The stitches came out of a pack that we had to open. Maybe we didn't flush it out good enough but I thought the peroxide would do a fair enough job at that. Anyways, I pretty much figure it's infected. What I am asking is what should we do now. Open the wound back up and let her lick it or keep it sewn and "bleed" it out ourselves. Oh, and he gave an oral antibiotic yesterday.

huh, might see if 4 or 5 days of oral, (penicillan) helps it run its course, but I am far from a vet

I just had a similar problem.I got some stuff from the vet that was like diluted iodine.I had to leave a hole open and shoot some iodine into it every day massage it around and let it drain for about a week.I would definately leave it open enough to drain.

Definately need a drain hole. Also, just because its infected doesn't mean you weren't sanitary. Hogs are nasty and hit hard. I'd try some pen-G and inject it. Along with pulling out a couple lower stitches to let it drain.

also let the air hit it as a lot of bacteria that cause infections are anaerobic and do not like air.
