Freeze Brands

Post by Mt Goat »

The topic about a Freeze brand registery has me wondering whos Brands are on a female walker I bought from a guy in Kansas.

I bought her right after Christmas 2007. Shes suppost to be 7, but looks 9. Shes suppost to be a good cat and bear dog. I bought her for a trainer for some young dogs I have.

Anyway does anyone know who uses these Brands or combination of brands

1) a Bears Foot on the Left ear
2) on her Right ear she has a lower case h or upsidedown 4
3)Then on the Right side of her body, she has a K but at the bottom of the K it on the angled leg it has a curve. It kind of looks like a K with a backwards J

I got this dog from a guy in Kansas, who said he got the dog from a guy in Colorado, but who knows. he said she was Nance Bred but that the papers were lost buy the guy he bought the dog from etc... again who knows.

Damn that dog must look a nascar with all those brands on it. Brands in the livestock industry are suppose to be simple but with that many brands it sure looks like the dog has had several owners in its life. Lets just hope that it was sold each time because the owner needed money.

I got ahold of Keith Stewart, hes from WY. He gave me what I felt was the honest scoop on her, and as soon as I started to decribe her he know exactly who she was. He told me that she at one point she was a hell of of dog. He said his best guess would be that shes been on over 200 bear and to many lion to count same with bobcat. He said that dog has been hunted hard her whole life. He said she was a Top Dog for several years until a Bear hit her in the head and almost killer her, after that is when he sold her. He said I was pretty close with my guess of her age. He figured she was about close to 9. He said he got her from a guy named Val Robb, from out in UT. He said Val is passed on now but his son Chris has the dogs and that old bloodline. And that she come from an old cold nose line of theirs.

Well all I can say is if you got that dog and it belonged to the rob boys then it caught game. they have a good pack of hounds and are good hunters themselves and great people to boot.

Thats coming from a Guy (keith stewart) who peddles 12 year old dogs for $2,000 and says they have years of good hunting left. The only dog that was cheaper was so gimped up it could barely walk. But that dog would rig a hot bear track so he only wanted $1500 for him. So if the dog had a pulse and would hunt it must be worth at least $5000.

As far as Keith, I've heard alot of negitive stuff about him from several people that have had dealings with him.

I didnt get this dog from Keith I got her from a guy who got her from Keith, When I talked to Keith about her, I told him, that I was told she was Nance bred, and that she was about 7. He asked me to decribe her and I told him she had a Bear foot on her left ear, at that point he jumped in and decribed her to a tee scares and all. He told me she was not Nance bred, but that he had gotten her from Val Robb, and that she was out of his old line of dogs. He said he had sold or lent her to a friend of his who hunted her alot. He said she was this guys or their top dog, for awhile and had caught lots of game. He said he and his friend were out hunting her when she almost got killed buy a bear, and it was after that, that he sold her to the guy from Kansas. I told him that I was told she was 7, then he told me NO, and that the dog was more like 9 maybe a bit older too, and thats exactly what she looks like. When I got her from the guy in Kansas he said she was 7, but when I first saw her she look every bit of 9.

I personally dont think Keith has any reason to lie to me about the dog. He could have said he didnt remember her and just left it at that, but everything he told me seemed truthful, again why lie, I wasnt looking for another dog, and he didnt try to sell me another dog. He decribed the dog and seem to know her well, but who knows.

Yep your right Big Chief/Dave. Like I said before my problem is as far as her age. BUT I was dumb enought to buy something over the internet sight unseen.

When you buy something sight unseen your Trusting that others are Honest, and Men of their Words. As Hunters it hard enough having to worry about all the Anti's. Its hard enough getting new people into hunting. The bigger our group is as hunters the stronger our voice becomes. I think it sucks that people getting into hunting with hounds get taken. In some cases as for myself its marked up to a lesson learned, for others its just screw this, and they are done. Pretty sad.

I will say I feel lucky that I have gotten some good advice from a couple of Houndsmen that I feel are honest people, that helpped point me in the right direction. To people they feel are honest and men of their words.

As for my OLD girl. I do like her and she does put her nose to the ground and try to make something out of an old bobcat track. So I know she has something, what who knows, we'll see, hopefully something. But at this point it is what it is, so anything she does produces will make me happy.

ADD * Note*

I talked to Big Chief this morning, 7-24-08 and he told me that everything he told me, is what he was told when he bought her from Keith. He also told me if I wasnt happy with the dog he would work something out with me. So I'm making it noted that I personally dont have any problems with him.

Do it yourself their Amigo. Just figure what brand your brand is going to be. Have it made out of heavy gauge brass to hold the cold and then I can guide you thru the process with very little toublr. Don'y make your brand all complicated or close letteres , simple so it stands out. Mine is ML connec- ted for my name and I use a right ear brand. Body brands are fine also. Figure it out and have it made. Any good machine shop or black smith can make one, or you can go online and by them.

I was only out a sunday afternoon and some gas to meet Keith. The first clue was when I was supposed to meet him to see the dogs in action, he didn't show up on time and of course the dogs had been grinding out a 2 DAY old bear track in 100 degree heat. Of course the dogs were all crippled and not very healthy looking. But they still had YEARS of good hunting.

Hey houndcrazedfool. I live down in sacramento CA and i am going to do some branding soon, and if you like you can see how its done, or if you have a brand you can get your dogs done.

Here is silver she was done as a pup bout 4 months it grew and looks weird.

Here is duke my walker and he was done when he was about 1yr. This is a bad pic of him, but the only one i have of him from this angle.
