Rattlesnake Injections

Has anybody tried the shots for rattlers? I may need to invest in them for a few of my dogs.

I've got 2 dogs down right now. One was bit thursday while hunting in one of the lion quota units the other was bit saturday while hunting in the same exact area. One of the dogs is young and has had very little sign of trouble i'm assuming he got bit by a bigger snake who could control it's venom. My old female however damn near died and had to be taken to the vet. The vet refused to give dexamethasone(supposedly it does more damage than good and the quote unquote "EXPERTS" don't recognize it as a form of treatment) and also told me the benadryl i gave her wouldn't help much but it did.

I was told one vial of anti-venin is $700 and they wanted to give her 2 viles. I told them give her pain killers, fluids and I'm taking her home.

When I asked about the preventative shots that are supposed to help I was told they don't give them and don't recommend them because the results are conflicting to whether or not they truly work. So i'm giving her tramadol and anti-b's everyday but still not doing so well.

This hurts because bear season opens friday and now I'm down a rig dog and a stellar young dog.

Arizona hunters I would avoid Southern Arizona Veterinary in Tucson cost me $500 and the only thing they did that I couldn't was give her morphine.

I'd like to hear from the people who have tried the shots whether they work or not.

I had 3 of my dogs vaccinated. You give them a shot and then 3 weeks later give them a booster. I haven't had one bit yet but it does make me feel better. I live within 5 minutes of a bighorn sheep range and take the dogs out 3 or 4 times a week (and try to avoid the contract trapper in the area.. he sure don't like me up there but thats another story). After killing a couple of rattlers I decided to go ahead and get the shots. I also had the opportunity to break them of messing with them but when they are trailing they could very easily bump into one. I carry dethameathosone with me all the time also.

When I was a kid I had a half Airedale that just hated snakes. We lived in an area that was just loaded with prairie rattlers and he got bite so many times that he became almost immune to the bite only getting a little bump and he never stopped killing them... this vaccine is suppose to work the same way building up their immunity to the bite
