Hormone induced heat cycle

Post by sethmcalex »

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of a hormone shot/pill you can give a female to start her heat cycle? If so how successful is it?

Don't do it! I have bought alot of females that have been given the hormones to keep them out and it has totally screwed them up after they were taken off of them.So I was talking to my vet and one of the reproduction specialists at Washington State University Vet College about the shot you are talking about and they both recommended against it saying it can screw their whole reproductive lives up.Dog reproduction is not as far advanced, medically, as cattle and other livestock and that is the reason for the erratic results with artificial insemination in dogs.It is making advancements but it isn't there yet. They both recommended just being patient unless it was a matter of an older female or time was running out because of something health related.

I know a person who has used it and has had successful litters. You do not want to use it on a dog just to bring her into heat though because like said above it will screw them up. I seen it used on older dogs that were not coming into heat any more and the owners were able to get one last litter from them. I have seen it used on a healthy younger dog and she stopped coming into heat on her own.

You could get him collected and freeze some semen. Take care.
