Dodge Cummins or Chevrolet Duramax????

We are looking into replacing a truck and have decided on one of the two, Dodge or Chevy.

Any opinions and advice and chronic problems about these two rigs would be greatly appreciated. With what they want for pick ups nowadays it is an important decision.

can never go wrong with a cummins. you're gonna pay alot more for the chevy and get alot less of a truck. For the money, the cummins is the best choice, and by far the best diesel motor out there, I have owned 3 of em, put 300,000+ miles on one of em. If you are so inclined to burn red fuel, forget about it in the chevy, they won't run on it, dodge will.

the duramax. It seems to be a quieter running truck. the allison tranny is as good as they come. the off-road capabilities of the chevys are superior to dodges. (from what i have seen first hand). Fuel mileage im sure is comparable or better than the dodge. and in my opinion they ride better than the dodge.

PS to the fella that says the chevy wont run on red. i beg to differ. i ran plenty of red through mine with no problems

DODGE!!!!! I have had mine going on 5 years and I love it. 164,000 hard mountain miles and still going strong!!!

Before the Dodge I had a Ford (got it in my divorce) and I think I got the shaft on that one as it was a pile of junk! :evil:

Before that I was a die hard Chevy girl. Now that I have the Dodge I will NEVER drive any other truck!!

grew up in a ford house. was a committed ford guy. joined the navy out of highschool. got to beat the crap out of ford, chevy & gmc 6 pac trucks, in the shop all the time. the dodge they had was 4 years older than the next oldest truck and was only in the shop once in a two year period while ALL the others were in the shop at least once every 6 months including the brand new GMCs.
been a Dodge truck guy ever since.

Well I have had both and have mixed opinions. I owned a 92 dodge cummins and put 298,000 on it before I sold it and I still see the truck running around town today. I never had one bit of trouble with the engine BUT went through two transmissions.

I then bought a 2004 duramax ran it till it had 91000. The truck was fantastic, best built truck I have ever owned. Brought the truck back in at 5000 due to a cracked bell housing in their infamous allison transmission. Ran it till 91000 with no trouble till I lost the drive gear. Can say nothing wrong about the engine but the tranny was having too many issues early on.

Bought a new 2006 Cummins and it is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever owned and to top it off when I bought it they made me the smokin deal :roll:

for $37,000, now the trade in is only worth $17000. The truck has had both upper and lower ball joints replaced twice in 80,000. The metal fuel lines leading to the injectors have snapped and had the truck towed in 3 times now.

The truck currently sits in Kari Dodge right now after we had to have it towned in on fridat night, this time which makes number 4 is because the shift cable has worn out enough that it is not sending the right signal to the computer and the computer thinks the truck is still in gear and will not start.

Be smart buy either a ford or a Toyota, I will never buy either of the other two again. They do not stand behind there product and they do not retain there value.

I think it is a personal opinion just like a lot of things. I will say the Cummins engine is fantastic but there are other considerations.
The company I work with runs many hundreds of pickups in some of the toughest conditions in the world. Not if you want to go you have to go. From the northern Rockies, to desert southwest, to Mexico , South America, Russia, and Egypt. We can contract with any of the majors and if we so desire we can buy our own as a personal choice and lease it back to the company but we cover reapirs and maintenance. As far as the trucks the company buys the switch to Chev. Duromax lowered overall R&M costs, and they have performed extreemly well after a few bugs were worked out with the elictrical system and computer the first couple of years they came out. As Jared said they do seem to get around better in the bad country and this may be due to a better balance of power as it goes thru the Allison Transmission. Still Diesel rigs because of the extreme weight of their engines in the front will bog down quicker that a gas model and in semit hard snow you better get them chains on quick. The Dodges have so much power which is a beatiful thing for towing that if you get one with a manual transmission you have an awful time staying out of them enough to get around. Severl year ago my hunting buddy Julian Baker who drives Dodges and I were elk hunting up high in the snow. He would have a heck of a time with that ultra powerful Dodge and I had a little half ton Silverado gas model I was slipping around and going places with just all terrain year round tires and no chains. It didn't have enough power or weight to break thru.

Right now I drive an 07 Duromax and like the truck I put about 40,000 miles a year on them. It's a good unit, maybe a little smoother than the new Dodge my son has with all the bells and whistle Jake brake included, but he gets better fuel mileage than I do and he can run off and leave me tied to a three horse trailer. So I gues anything beats walking. LOL!

Heck my favorite truck is still my 93 Ford Diesel with 200,000 miles flat bed, and dents to match. ( Old Rattler) has done a lot of hunting over the years and it's a REAL TRUCK.

I'm think trucks are like dogs. It doesn't matter what kind you go with theres going to be the culls in every kind. I like them both but have herd about the bad deals in both kinds.

I own a 2002 Duramax. I love it for haulin' my 17ft stock trailer loaded with horses. I have also hauled a 24 fifth wheel camper, but I absolutely [i]hate[/i] it in the hills.
It is a truly comfortable ride, and hauls great. In the woods, the clearance sucks! It bottoms out in the tiniest puddle. If you're willing to pay for a lift and taller tires, it may do ok- I don't know 'cause mine is stock. I like a lighter truck for getting around in the woods.

you are comparing apples to oranges, if this makes any difference the n.r.a.'s who's who with gun control list the cummins diesel group with supporting gun control. sometimes we consumers can take a stand on products we buy. try checking it out it will scare you when you see who all wants your guns. :oops:
